I hear nothing but positives about Australia are there any negatives?

Being a loyal Aussie, I have to say no. The only thing I don't like is our imigration policy. There is too big a leaning toward Asians & middle east countries. Most of those do not fit in too well, they try to enforce their former countries bad habits & customs on us, and most of it is what they came here to get away from.A great proportion of crimes committed are by people from such countries. Otherwise, it's a great place to live.

smurf21697
nope!

sydney is a smidge expensive though

ABCDiamond Britzinoz.com
The biggest negative that I hear a lot of, is that Australia is not like the country that people have come from.

Things are "negative" differences here, but we need to look at them as being different and not always as negatives.

Some people worry about snakes and spiders, but I have two kids swimming in the pool right now, and they screamed when a wasp flew overhead. But, IF they were to see a spider or snake, they wouldn't worry, although they would keep away from it :)

From a British point of view, driving here is a negative, until you realise that undertaking is normal and legal, unlike in the UK. Therefore it just becomes "different".

This applies to many things.

But real negatives:
No snow in QLD,
No English Pubs
Long queues for petrol at 89 cents per litre
Having to buy extra towels for all those kids that come round to use the pool

The Positives outweight the Negatives for me :)

Not really...only small things that are annoying but down here you just brush it off with a 'she'll be right mate'.
I gotta agree with bingalee on his point - too many. You find schools here that are 90% asian. Good luck trying to do well at a school like that.
But yeah, little things, flies, mossies, it can get REALLY hot, like 45 degrees +...gotta watch out for jellies and rays at some beaches...but i wouldn't want to be anywhere else right now.

flip_fantasia2000
We have more killer animals than most other countries! That said, I have never even seen a Sydney Funnel Web spider in my life and I have lived here my whole life!

I have also never seen a cane toad ever, and only seen kangaroos in the zoo or dead on the side of the highway.

The people are generally friendly, the weather is good and we are a good safe distance from the rest of the world... we dont let the negatives bother us down here :)

Austin B
No. I want to live there.

Mel
The only real negative is our distance from the rest of the world when travelling. But at the same time it can be a positive.

Yes we have flies but you hardly see them and they don't do anything, you don't get swarms or anything like that. We have seagulls that like to steal your chips at the beach but it's funny watching them fight over that one chip you throw at them.

Sharks- not a problem really, go to a patrolled beach
Snakes - don't go into the bush, if you do use common sense
Spiders - won't come near you, usually have webs in the corner of the roof, kill them if they bother you, if not they won't harm you

There are no BIG negatives but lots of positives such as out free health care system, our education system, etc.

Cane Toads
Too many rabbits
Too many kangaroos
Sayings like " 'ees gone down the booyays chasing pukekos with a long 'andled shovel"
G'day
Vegemite (not really, I love it)
Tourists
Sharks
Snakes
Spiders

Of course there are. There are negatives for every country.

We have flies, for example.

Depends on where you live in Australia. I'll tell you what I'm familiar with.

~Queensland can be extremely humid. Temperatures can be an average of 30 degrees celcius, which wouldn't be too bad if it was dry heat. But with humidity consistently 80-90% in summer, it gets pretty stifling.

~Queensland doesn't have normal seasons. It has the dry season and the wet season. Winter is dry with sunny skies and wind. Summer is still, humid and monsoonal.

~Further south (New South Wales, Victoria, etc), is a bit different. The weather can be chilly and windy one day, and swealtering hot the next.

~Further south in the summer time, there are usually a lot of flies. If you're having a picnic, it isn't unual to have about 10 flies sitting on your shoulders and back, with several more buzzing about your face.

~Depending on where you live, huntsman spiders, termites, caintoads and cochroaches can be regular visitors to your home, no matter how clean and pest controlled you keep it.

~ Immigrants to Australia who sap off our welfare system, bring crime to our neighbourhoods or who isolate themselves from society.

~The law system too often gives more rights to the criminal than the victim.

~The education and health systems are suffering, although they seem to be better than what is available in some other countries.

~Most of our best holiday destinations are overrun by tourists, and swamped with Aussie merchandise (think of stuffed toy koalas holding the Aussie flag)........... I mean, we have very little to do with these 'mascots' besides what we see in zoos and tourist shops....... it's highly commercialised and fake.

~ Australian television sucks. The only decent things to watch on television usually comes from Hollywood.

I love living in Australia, and don't see myself ever moving to another country. I think there are more positives than negatives.

Surfininjunmonkey
Yeah its a big budget movie with the same ole tired story line,I guess if you saw it in IMAX it might be worth it for all the scenery maybe?
