I noticed in Australia, everyone drinks beer (well, lager) out of girly sized glasses called Schooners. Why?

This was in Sydney, Byron Bay, Brisbane, Cairns, Port Douglas etc. Incidentally, Sydney has no pubs at all really. Kings Cross was supposed to be lively, but it was empty and had only a few bars. Has it always been like this?!

Interesting! I don't understand your idea that they drink Schooners so as to keep the beer cold for longer -it's scientific fact that a greater volume of liquid takes longer to heat up, than a small one. So drinking pints would keep the beer colder.

Still most places we went to (not all) gave us little schooners even when we asked for pints.

Also, I admit there WERE pubs... but you're right.. you do have to look harder for them than in England.

As for the English liking warm beer... beer/ale is best when it's not cold. And we also put lager in the fridge.

Bloody hell mate, with the conversion from pound to Oz dollar you got the schooner for around 1 pound....but good to see you lived up to the stereo type and still found something to whinge about.

I worked in Australia years ago and it might now have changed but the reason given to me for drinking cold beer from small glasses was so that the beer didn't have time to heat up.

The schooner is an old measurement that is about a 1/3rd of a pint (I think) and is more usually used when drinking sherry

This might be right ;-D

You are nuts! I lived in Sydney for a year and a half. You get your drugs at Kings Cross. You get your Tooheys or Victoria Bitter at the "corner" Pub. And there is literally one on every corner. We call them "pints" because they come in pints sized mugs not schooners.

its not that it stays colder longer
it so you can finish it befor it gets hot

ELM
You sound like an idiot.
Go back toBritain with your shitty weather, warm beer and horrible food....and your **** cricket team!

Pete
Its too hot for pints. Schooners will stay cold while you drink them.

I'm from Australia and have lived in several of the places you mentioned. Regarding Sydney having no pubs, you should have opened your eyes a bit more. Australia isn't Britain, we dont have the traditional English 'pubs' that you have in the UK. Our way of being in a pub is going down to the beach bars or the clubs, if you went down to the harbour you would have seen dozens of bars down there. It's too warm over in Oz to be sitting in a small pub we want to be outside in the sunshine. Kings Cross may have been empty when you went, depends what time of year you went. I reccommend you go again! It's usually thrieving in Summer.

I lived in Sydney for 2 years it does have pubs, you just have to look a bit deeper. the german pub in the rocks is good, actually most in the rocks are good. Other then that look to the subs for a real drinking pub.

I've lived in Sydney and spent loads of time there over the years - it has a huge number of great places to go for a drink (unlike the cesspits of places like London).

The usual reason for smaller drinking glasses is - of course - that beer warms up if it takes too long to finish a glass, so a pint is considered too big (the British are world famous for their strange and incomprehensible liking for tepid beer).

However, do not be too decieved on size. A typical schooner is 400 ml or 425 ml (see the NSW trading standards site). This is almost the same as a US pint and only 10% to 20% smaller than a UK pint. Coupled with the fact that the alcoholic content of the beer is 20% or more higher and there is not much to complain about.

Oh, and I am British. But I drink Irish beer.

I think its so the lager doesnt get hot, They dont drink it like its going out of fashion like the english do.. so it if its in a pint glass its got more chance of getting warm!!
No one wants thats
