I think Ivan Milat offered me a lift? |
Hello everyone, Ok this is gonna sound weird.., but last night i was watching the TV and was falling asleep and then a programme came on and it was about a Australian serial killer called Ivan Milat, now i have never ever heard of him before and the programme said he was a backpacker killer. I was watching the start of it and they showed a picture of him and i thought wow he looks familar... then they started saying he picked up backpackers in his car in new south wales and drove them to the Belanglo State Forest and killed them.
Now this is the part that is weird - I think i was offered a lift by this guy while i was in Australia in 1989.. i can't remember what month is was but it was summer time.. i think it was july or august. i was backpacking with my brother and we also went surfin. Now what happened was me and my bro was backpacking heading to Belanglo State Forest and a guy in a jeep type car pulled over and shouted at us "hey mate do you wanna a lift" and we said no we are fine thanks... and he said "suit yourself mate" and he drove off.. then about 15 mins later we saw him again and he had parked his car further up the road and he said "where ya from you two?" and we said we are from kent in england and he said "my mum is orginally english, are you sure you don't wanna a lift mate" and we said nah its cool because we need to burn off some calories!! and we wanna backpack the walk and he just looked at us and drove off and that was it.
I don't know what to do? he is in prison now and he didn't do anything wrong to us but it was so weird because that program made me remember what happened.. i never heard of the backpack murders before and had never seen him on TV before.
It looked 100% like him, same moustache, same car, it was definatley ivan milat i am convinced thanks david |

NSW police believe he is responsible for other murders and are still investigating the possibilties contact them your information could be helpful. |

OK, so you might have been picked up by Ivan Milat, but I still find your story a bit odd.
You think it was summer time, but say it was July or August - that's winter here.
You were headed for the Belanglo State Forest - no backpackers do that, there's nothing there. Yet 20 years later you remember that's where you were heading.
You refused the lift because you wanted to 'backpack the walk' - why, you would have been on the Hume Highway which passes through very few towns. No-one just walks here unless they are hitchhiking and it appears you weren't.
So, sorry, there are just a few holes here. |

If you came in contact with Ivan Milat and you were backpackers then go buy yourself a lottery ticket 'cause you sure are lucky to still be around.
By the way, July and August are winter months here in Oz. |

Actually Mel above me ^ Ivan targeted both male and female tourists and killed both.
First body was found in 1992....
Just thank your guardian angel that day......you were so lucky. |

It's entirely possible it was him! It sounds like your guardian angel looked after you. You should offer her thanks tonight. Enjoy your life! Sounds like you got a second chance. |

Like the other poster said, you should advise the NSW police, I think they still would like more information about him from anyone who came in contact. And yes he did take two people previously, not just singles. |

You could always get in touch with the police in Australia. It was because of a British tourist that they actually caught the guy from what I remember. They might just tell you they're not interested but then again they might want to piece more of his history together. |

I wouldn't worry about it because he has been in jail for a while now and will be there until the day he dies so even if you tried to press charges or something there wouldn't really be much point. Just be thankful you didn't become victims too... |

It might be worth your while writing to the NSW cops and telling them this story, as there could be other charges outstanding. Your information might help to place this man in a certain area on a certain date etc. You had a lucky escape. |

Sounds like a lucky escape. I don't doubt your story, my mother had a vaguely similar experience way back in the 1930s.
Incidentally there is some doubt that he acted alone, I do not know for sure but it may not be 'case closed' yet. Maybe you should contact the NSW police. |

this story sounds like a fabrication to me. i wouldn't bother the police if i were you, as wasting police time is an offence. |

July/August is actually winter in Australia.
Ivan Milat has been identified by other back packers that he gave a lift too, some he intended to kill and managed to escape and others before his killing spree began.
The only thing that makes me question if it was him (not that I don't believe you) is that you said you were with your brother and I'm sure Milat only targetted female couples.
It sounds to me you were here in December, just before he started killing. Either way, you were lucky. |

Not sure what exactly your question is but I'll give you an answer. It sounds to me that you are having regrets about not accepting a ride from this strange man and your primitive human receptors are indulging in an orgy of excitement about communicating with this criminally insane character. You should contact this man and talk with him...tell him how you feel, and tell him you are happy you did not accept his invitation, although you will continue to fantasize of the stimulating near death encounter you had with him. Ask him what he would have said to you, or what he would have done with the bodies afterward? Who knows...? you guys may have grown fond of each other and become best friends. It is not too late either. Finding this psychopathic evil-doer and talking about your feeelings with him is the only way to put this behind you. |
