I want live in Melbourne, but terrified of big spiders! How likely is it to find them in your house? |
Additional Details I am practically on the plane ready to fly over and start a new life, nursing, in Melbourne. But now I have serious doubts, being a British wimp, and scared of BIG spiders. I am afraid even to look at a picture of a spider, so my fear is very real! I really want to go to Austalia, I know its one of the best countries in the world, but I cannot bear the thought of the spiders! I don't care if they are venomous or not, it is purely the size, and would appreciate any info anyone could give, about the reality of the spiders in the city and suburbs. Thanks, I so don't want to mess up this opportunity, because of my fear!

ok sweetie here is the true answer ok everyone out there thinks australia is crawling with snakes, spiders crocs yes we have the red back & the funnel web watch out for this fellow ok wear gloves when doing the garden ok but in general unless your out herein the outback like i am i reckon you will not be seeing to many snakes or spiders do not get me wrong yes they are out there in the bush but i do not hear of do many snakes crawlling around pitt st sydney or swanson st melbourne ,
but if you want these items come out to the outback ok i got right now looking at him a bloody big huntsman up in the corner of my computer room but flys nope he is waiting for dinner and earlier today i shot a king brown a little bit too close to my front porch |

Have your house professionally sprayed before you move in and get it done every year after that. |

Yes we have spiders but they are not crawling around our walls every day.
If you are living in the outer suburbs you may see a few more than in the inner city but generally they are not inside.
I live in an outer suburb & get to see one or Two large ones a year other than that its the Daddy Long Legs a small long legged spider that is more annoying for the webs they make.
Basically have the house sprayed like the above poster suggested & come over. |

Good Aussie jokes, I love 'em! :-)
And you, Andrea, dont be a wimp - just go and see! There are more housewifes falling from a ladder whilst cleaning windows every day than men beaten by a spider! Have fun Down Under! |

We have the big Huntsman spiders running around our house and in a way its good, because if there is any cockroaches around, they soon eat them and besides if you leave them alone, they will leave you alone. Natures Law. |

As likely as it is anywhere. I'm terrified of spiders too but I just get my house and garden sprayed and they stay away. It only costs $200-300.
It's worth doing because unfortunately it's not the big ones that do us the most harm!!!
Good luck- enjoy Melbourne. It's fabulous. |

I've lived in Melbourne my whole life and the biggest spider i've seen is a Hunsman but i don't see any around the house much only 2 times a year if i'm extremely unlucky. And i've never seen a cockroach in Melbourne either. Everybody thinks Austraia is covered in bugs, snakes, crocs and kangaroos. It's not like that here you'll love it. |

big spiders are good you can see them coming at you & get a bat to fight them off with
it is the small ones under 1 meter in hight that are the problem |

In that case, you better not come.
ONLY JOKING! I hardly ever see any spiders. I'm also a nurse in Melbourne, so feel free to email me with any questions you might have. I've also nursed in the UK so I know what it's like to work in the both. |

Sooner or later you'll see them, there's no way of avoiding it. You also have to watch out for the Red Back which is small but poisonous.Watch out for the snakes as well ! Oh, and if you go to the beach mind the sharks and the jellyfish ! If you go to the north of Australia there are crocodiles as well... |
