hey, well first of all, unless you are a total recluse you wont be on your own. just book into a hostel, the vast majority of people come alone or part company with their friends and make new ones and everyone is so open to talk to and make friends!

but:
if you want to give yourself a head start and make the whole thing less daunting check out ozintro.com
i went with them when i first arrived. they sort out a lot of stuff you need to do like bank accounts, visas, medicare etc and organise your whole first week in Sydney with cool trips and activities. you are in a group of about 12 people who have all just arrived so you kind of have an instant group of friends. check the site for more details, but i still keep in touch with a lot of the people i met in that first week.

also there is ozexperience.com who run bus tours across australia. if you book on some of those you see the country and because you are on a bus with people for long periods you form a group. its another way to make friends when you get there. there are loads of tour companies but i think they are best.

both companies offer things that an independent minded person could sort out for themself, but it is way easier and has the socialising benifits.

once you get there you will see what i mean about how easy it is to make friends. get into a dorm in a hostel, talk to people, they will almost always be happy to talk to you, and you will find yourself becoming like that too. you meet the best people there! its a great life, you will love it!

Summer
I want to do the same thing actually...I will have to check back up with this question and see if you get any answers because I am curious myself...

aint_no_stoppin_us
I doubt there are any groups that would go for that long but you can check out travelbuddy.com, which hooks you up with other people traveling to the same locale as you during the same period.

You may want to try a travel agency.

EF tours does group tours in Australia.
I went on one last year and I had the time of my life!

They go to:
Sydney
Surfer's Paradise
Brisbane
Cannes
Melbourne
Gold Coast
Great Barrier Reef
Byron Bay
etc.

And you can create your own tour in some cases!!

This will help you decide whether you want to live there or not! But keep in mind, I have never heard of groups that live together for a year.
An exchange program or a volunteer program could open doors for free boarding, but you would have to work.
If you dont want to be alone, find a few friends who have the same idea as you.

Australia is a great place--good luck to you and your adventures!

If you can't find someone to go with you, don't be afraid of going alone. The Aussies love Americans and are very friendly. Public transportation is quite good. Have fun. .

try a travel agency or contact me & i would go with you ihave always wanted to go to australia

:)

Curious
I'm intrigued. You want to go for a year? And you want someone else to go for that length of time? What do you plan to do there? How will you support yourself? If you're interested in visiting another country for that long, presumably you're interested in meeting new people. Forget finding someone to go with you; it's unrealistic.

Develop a plan (objectives, how you will accomplish them, etc) and go for it. Hint: you can't just arrive somewhere and expect to find work easily without working papers -- they have to protect the local workforce. If you plan to study, the school will give you plenty to do with your time. If you plan to just bum around figuring out what to do with your life, you may have enough in about two months and then may want to move on. Nowhere is perfect, and you make your own happiness and success no matter where you are.
