I want to live in Australia. If you're older than 30 years old, I want your opinions, PLEASE?

I'm in my late 40's, I'd like to go to live in Australia, I already was there as a tourist for about 2 weeks, but one thing is to go as a tourist and another is to live in that country. I'd appreciate your sharing your thoughts about how was your experience of living in Australia if you were living there for more than one year, what city did you live in, was that experience good or not ? lifestyle, people etc. Thank you very much !!

There is plenty of information about life in Australia available to you on the Web. For a start, search YA Questions with the word "Australia" in them.

I have a lot of Aussie YA contacts. If you email me with further details about yourself I can make you a contact with access to them.

There are also numerous relevant books, films and websites.

Like any country, Australia is multi-faceted. Life is wonderful for some people and pretty miserable for others.

The key factors are the generally very dry, hot climate (with plenty of exceptions), the egalitarian culture, the casual, pleasure-loving way of life, the universal health care system.

Generally, by world standards, Australians are very tolerant of cultural and ethnic differences: you will be free to live, dress, and talk however you like, within the law. However, the pressure to integrate into the dominant Anglo-Saxon culture is increasing.

A classic example was the "Cronulla riots" in Sydney in 2005, where white anglo youths pitted themselves against Lebanese Australians for control of a beach. Beaches are iconic and deeply significant to Australians, and they treasure their freedom to sunbake nearly naked, have gender equality, have family picnics, and have free public access to all beaches.

Even people whose native language is English sometimes find it very difficult to adjust to the Australian way of life. You must expect things to be different and slightly alien, and be willing to make considerable changes to your attitudes and behaviour.

Some people find the bright light and wide open skies liberating, others crave the security of closed-in spaces. It depends on your personal reaction.

You will find that Australians are extremely diverse, but united in their passion for this country.

I'm in my 30's.My husband was 39 when he migrated to Australia from Ireland.
(he's 41 now,nearly 42).He absolutely loves it here.
At the start he wasn't to sure that he had made the right decision.I was quite happy to stay in Ireland(I'm Australian),but my husband thought that Australia had more to offer our children and a better working life for himself, and I would be alot happier living with my family. At the start he found it a bit hard finding a job,as in Ireland he was a site manger and was finding it hard to get a job as a site manger here so he got a job working on a building site as a carpenter, and 3 months later,he then went and got a health and safety supervisor's certificate and then was made site super visor,a year later he then went and done a project mangers course and now works for the same company as a project manger in Melbourne. We don't live in Melbourne,we live about a 40 minute drive from Melbourne,it close to where all my family live and my husband loves where we live.Every 6 to 7 months he goes back home with one of our children for a couple of weeks, where when when were in Ireland I could only afford to go home every 2 to 3 years and at that we would have to get a back loan most of the time so that I could go back home for a couple of weeks.Last year if you had of asked my husband and children did they want to go back home to Ireland they would have had thier bags backed in a heart beat, but now when you ask them, they all say that they are happy here and don't want to go back to Ireland to live.My husband and children love the easy going life stlye where we live. The people are very friendly, and there are a few Irish people living where we live and we all get together and go on weekend trips together and celebrate Christmas,Saint Patricks day together, and we have a deadly time.I hope I was of some help Take care.

May I ask what part of Australia you came to visit?

storm ahead
I am now in my late 40s and have been here for 20 years, when we arrived it was a big adventure and i do not think i stopped to think about the consequences,I miss my family and friends but have made lots of new friends,i can never replace my family so encourage them to visit at any chance they have they love it and wish they too had made the move,i am the youngest so they consider themselves too old to come over permenantly.Although i am happy and content here i am not sure how i would go if i had waited to make the move now, i think it would be harder to make friends as most of my friends were made through having young children.Go for it Australia is very laid back and to be honest half the time you feel like your a tourist on holliday because of that.I recently returned to the UK for a holliday and no way would i ever go back to live there,i love Australia and it's people even when they call me a Pomm.

I am older than 30. 34 yrs old. I have never been there. I have always wanted to go to Sydney. I have wanted to go since I was 5.

I've lived in Sydney fort almost 4 years now. I like it here because it such a simple life. People are friendly, most are accepting of other people belonging to another race, lifestyle is pretty simple; you can just go to the park or the beach and enjoy nature.
Downside are high prices for petrol, food, housing although if you have a good job, you can afford it, not sure if you have a family if affordability is difficult though...

It's too bad that you did not stop at a wonderful small island called Norfolk Island about 2 hrs by air from Aus. It is a wonderful place to live for someone 40+ the crime rate is so very low & the beauty, warmth, hospitality & sense of security is great. It is under the protectrate of Aus, but functions automously for the most part, it has great history, & you can feel the sense of community. Please check out the web site for Norfolk Island, you will be amazed at this island gem

But Why??
Born and raised here mate, best place on earth!!! And Ive been everywhere...
