If you can, go via Singapore and return via LA or San Francisco. This is because you are then always flying with the jetstream, which will reduce your flying time by some hours (the aircraft doesn't have to battle headwinds).

Qantas do some great deals, one of which is called "World Discovery" You can find deals here :http://www.qantas.com.au/regions/dyn/uk/specials/WorldDiscovery keep looking at prices, as they change regularly.

Try to stop 24 hours in Singapore and LA, Qantas or BA allow this for free on your air fare and overnight accommodation can be had cheaply in both places, making it a very cheap way of seeing those two places. I stopped in Hollywood for $17 on the way back from NZ last year, right on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The 24 hour stop, where you pick up the same flight the next day, is great for combating jet lag.

go via malaysia or singapore...try to avoid going thru the states...the service with malaysian ans singapore airlines is the best around....and there is plenty to do at the airports....dont forget to go to nz as well its only a couple of hours away

If flying to the Australian east coast, it doesn't make much difference in terms of flying time if you fly east or west. Any benefit you get flying the Atlantic is lost when flyingt he Pacific. The two things that make a difference is the plane and where the fuel stopover(s) is/are. The older the plane the less fuel efficient it is, so the plane doesn't fly as fast and requires more fuel stopovers. The location of the fuel stopvers is also important because it might mean that you are not flying the most direct route to Australia; you might be deviating slightly off the most direct route for the stopover. Hence why charters generally take longer than the popular scheduled airlines.

However, to answer your question, the most popular fastest route to Sydney flying east seems to be with a single 1 hour fuel stop in Singapore. When flying west, it seems to be a single 1 hour fuel stop in San Fransisco. Both are about 23 hours when flying London to Sydney.

If you're flying to Perth, it is quicker to fly east from London rather than across the US.

If you are going to Perth on the West coast of Australia, then the best way is on Emirates via Dubai. They have connections from 5 UK airports and Emirates in-flight entertainment is the best.

My wife and went to Sydney by Malaysian Airlines via Kuala Lumpur, they do fly with just a refueling stop but we had a three day (2 night) stopover, it was very cheap at under Â£90 on top of the flight cost (in total both ways for the 2 of us) for all transfers and 5 star hotel and it helped break an otherwise long journey, have a good trip and if you want someone to carry your bags put MY name down for the price of a ticket.

I find the Asia way the better way, even though its still a long way, it doesn't seem as bad than going across the states and then on to Austraila.

I do this trip a lot...both via US and also the other way.
The best trip I have had is with Japan Airlines who give you a stopover in Osaka ... On the way over to Oz you have time for a shower and a sleep at the airport (you can buy a little room for sleeping and a shower for about $15. On the way back they put you up in a hotel (5 star) at the airport for the night. The hotel is inside the airport and you really appreciate that break in the long trip.
I found a great company called Jalpak in London who did the best deals for Japan Airlines. I think there are other companies too but this one worked well for me and the price was good.

Either by flying QANTAS or British Airways. Both are very comfortable airlines with superior customer services skills.

Best route is:
London Heathrow - Bangkok

Bangkok - Sydney.

Personally speaking have gone via Bangkok, Singapore and the USA and via bangkok is definately quickest. If in doubt speak to any major travel agent or log onto www.travelbag.com/
They are specialists for the entirity Australasia. Therefore they can do all sorts of packages and discounts that high street stores could not even comprehend. Well worth a look.

Depends where your flying from & to.

Shortest flying time is via Dubai on Emeriates to Perth, Cathay Pacific, BA & Quantas go via Hong Kong, Singapore Airlines go via Singapore.

Currently Emeriates have the best prices, but Singapore AIrlines have the most legroom, along with Cathay Pacific.

You will have more choice of airline from Heathrow than other airports.

Remember to take aircraft changeovers into account when calculating your travelling time - esp date changes.

The site below provides passenger based reviews of airlines - legroom is really important on long haul flights, when we went the first time with BA & Quantas the legroom was not to good, but Singapore Airlines was comfortable, and the food was better.

I have travelled extensively from the UK to Asia and Australia and strongly recommend Emirates Airlines. If your flying from Manchester, Birmingham, or Glasgow for example, you arrive in Dubai just around midnight....then the flight to Perth leaves at 2:35 am, then 13 and 1/2 hours to Perth....Serivice, Flight entertainment is the best. If your flying to the East coast....Emirates also flies through Dubai....If you can do a stopover in Dubai...and you like to shop....it would be worthwild.
If your flying from London,.....Singapore Airlines....is great as well, travelling through Singapore. Are you going for a visit...or residency....But if you would like an Aussie experience...maybe start your flight with Quantas.....CRIKEY mate....you have a lot of options...but don't fly over the Atlantic....jet lag is worse..as the tiem goes back....flying over Asia...your body absorbs the travel more.....Have a great flight....and great journey.....my wife are thinking of moving to Perth in two years....tired of the Rain in the UK.but definitely don't swim....you might get stabbed by a STINGRAY....safe trip
