Australia isn't classed as british it's australian. We've a common heritage and share the same queen but oz is an independant nation.British now includes quite a large group of western-hating individuals who you really don't want having free access to your country

Oz is not British, it used to be a colony where we sent our prisoners, then became independant, but a member of the Commonwealth..where did you go to school ? PS. You need a visa to visit Oz, but a residence permit to live there.

Its immigration policy. They need a visa to live here - not visit. Thats the difference.

pure speculation: possibly australia is becoming rightly so-a very popular destination for skilled immigrants, ie doctors nurses etc, and population levels require regular inspection, visas usually make it harder for anyone to go to a place regardless of the country's location, I would love to live in australia.

My understanding is that it is easier for the British to visit anyone of the commonwealth countries but they still need to apply for a VISA. The whole point of visas is that one can regulate and monitor the flow of people. Although it is easier for British to acquire visas for aus as opposed to say Americans.

fanta
lol Australia is not British we are Aussie .any one that comes to Australia needs a visa we don't want any meat heads here or disease we are a island cant understand why people think Aussies live in the dark ages

The_Mouse
And where did you get this "Australia is classed as British" piece of information?
We are NOT British. We speak English - well, a kind of... and we are part of the Commonwealth - but we are NOT British!

Australia has not been classed as remotely British since 1986 when the 'Australia Act' was passed by the British government eliminating the last vestiges of British legal authority in Australia.

cat_blue_canberra
Because officially Australia is an independent country, although the reason some people in Britain think Australia still is a colony living in the dark ages, is owing to the fact that Australia is still one of two countries in the Commonwealth that is still flying a defaced British ensign as it's national standard. New Zealand is the other one.

It isn't totally British, it's a Commonwealth country which is run by their own government
