Next door to the Land Down Under.
Or if you wanna get technical, "Land of the long white cloud." |

New Zealand is the largest of all islands in the south pacific. That is, two mainland areas named North Island and South Island.
Australia is going to be renamed as the West island. Because of its arid land, aborigine natives including ex-convict bloodlines it makes an ideal place to dump our trash.
NZ is really a country (to walk around it will take you a year). From Auckland city all within a few hours drive you have the sun, surf, beaches, mountains and snow skiing, forests and bush walks, scuba diving and deep sea fishing and everything else you get from a city. Its clean green with a culture like no other.
Come visit ;) |

"The Shaky Isles" because of earthquakes. Actually the land down under is in the Northern Hemisphere. Australia is up-over. |

Agree with all the others who say "Land of the Long White Cloud" but I also think it's the other state of Australia (haha, no seriously there is a bit in Australia's legislation allowing NZ to join us) |

The Land of the Long White Cloud - Aotearoa. As you come in on an aeroplane you can see this - quite beautiful. |

Many answers to this question.
Probably Godzone is the best answer.
Aotearoa is a name given to New Zealand by an anthropologist about 120 years ago called Elsdon Best. He collected the lore and yarns of the Maori peoples and published them. They now pass for official history, but are not so.
The Shakey Isles come about because the country is prone to earthquakes and volcanic outbursts. In the Rotorua region of the country, about 300 earthquakes a week are recorded, but until they get over 2.5 or so on the Richter scale, they are not felt and therefore not commented on (and only perhaps 2 a month would be over this size). But every 40 years or so the plates move and an 8 or a 9 will occur. The country is due for one of them now.
The ancient Maori thought of the 2 main islands as seperate entities and accordingly called the North Island, "The Fish Of Maui", and the South "The Land of Greenstone". (Te Ika a Maui and Te Wai Pounamu respectively).
The first European to record his voyage to NZ and map a bit of coastline was Abel Tasman and he named the place Staaten Land.
A bit later, James Cook used Tasman's charts, relocated the place and renamed it after Tasman's birthplace - Zeeland. |
