If i move to Australia do I have to pay for my kids to go to school?

I read in a book recently that if you move to N.Z my kids (secondary age and one ready for college) would face fees of upto $10,000 per year to study there. Anyone who moves to uk gets free secondary education/post Uni education. Would they have to pay fees in Australia? Is this definatly true of N.Z also?

thanks

In WA you have to pay school fees for years 11 and 12, and if you dont they will sue you, it does not matter if you receive government assisstance.

Up to year 10, fees are voluntary but you are expected to pay them, they are not too much.

That's not true of either New Zealand or Australia if you are a Permanent Resident or citizen and send your children to government primary or secondary schools.

In Australia, most public schools expect a voluntary contribution of up to about $500 (though usually less than that). It's voluntary, but the vast majority of people pay it.

Both countries charge fees for university tuition, but they are heavily subsidised for PRs and citizens and interest free government loans are available to all students to defer payment until they earn over a certain amount per year.

Your information probably related to fees for people who are not PRs or citizens: in that case fees are charged and could easily be $10,000 per child per year.

There are fees for private schools but there are no large fees for public schools in NZ or Australia (many public schools ask for voluntary contributions as they are generally under funded - but it is just that - voluntary).
Univerisities charge, - though you can choose to defer payment until you start work. Post grad courses are generally paid by the student unless you receive a scholarship or an employer pays.

It would also depend on whether you are a citizen, resident or 'international student'.International students pay full fees.

Until you are classed as a PR there are fees to attend primary and secondary school - 4-10K per year

No.......... only particular small fees.
Not full course amounts.

In Oz the government pays for those collecting government payments but I you need to be a aussie citizen for that. Otherwise the costs are the same as NZ.

In Australia in public schools it is mostly free. Some schools will ask for a small amount for texts books, subjects fees for those that are more costly to run such as woodwork, photography, etc, school camps, uniform, etc.. I have heard of some asking for school fees, but it is optional.

Private schools can charge anywhere between $1,500 a year to $10,000 a year plus the above charges, except for textbooks.

In Australia we have TAFE and Uni. Now, both of these are subsidized by the government. Unless you have PR you will pay more.

TAFE is your cert 1, 2, 3, 4 Diploma courses. More trades and practical then university. TAFE costs anywhere from $200 - $1,500 for the course.

Uni is the expensive one, Australians have a HECS system for your uni tuition, this allows them to pay the debt later through their tax once they earn over $50,000 per year. This is only for undergraduate courses, post graduate you need to pay up front. Uni can cost you $10,000 per year quite easily, hense why majority of Australians use HECS. Plus text books, parking, any union fees, etc.. Uni is your degrees, masters, doctorate, etc.. It is also more theory based.

If you send your kids to a public school in NZ it's mostly free. The school might ask you to pay a small fee for printing and photocopying costs for the year and might ask for a donation, but that's about it. I think it's the same for Australia.

In Australia Primary school, 12 years and younger cost approx $70 per year
High school, 12 years to 17/18years, it depends on what subjects you child chooses, the school charges more if you do expensive subjects such as computing and science. History etc are cheaper. So, for all expensive subjects it costs approx $800 per year, for all cheaper subjects approx $500 for the year.
University - it depends on what you study, each course is different and the different universities all charge there own fees. The children can take out a gov loan to pay for the fees, they then pay it back themselves after they have graduated.
Tafe - which is for the non graduating degrees, such as diplomas etc. The courses are often only 1 or 2 years, it costs approx $500 a term, so $1,000 a year per child, again depends on what they study.

if you have the right to live there,THEN you will not pay these fees, but if you don't have the right visa then yes,i know because my daughter went to school for a year when she was only starting primary school and the fees were 10.000 dollars P/Year.
at that time my partner was trying to get sponsored, and the application was being processed,so while waiting for it we didnt have any rights like australian citizens do.
unfortunately oz is not like the uk.
here we have everything for free.in oz we pay for most of the things, just like in the US for example.
