I live in Australia - but I lived in London for four years - and I miss it like crazy! People say that Australia is cheaper - rubbish. I saved more in the UK than I could here - far more disposable income, and all of my friends who had a decent job in the UK agree. People think it's expensive when they keep converting their dollars over....der.
You need to do 'pros' and 'cons'. Obviously: weather can be a huge factor for some. When I returned home, I think I'd forgotten how nice the weather is here...and I must say I think I'd find it difficult to go back to dark, cold, rainy London! The lifestyle is totally different for the most part - but that depends on your city of choice, and your personal preference. My friends thought I was crazy being as in love with London as I was (am!) - but I love the poms, the tube, Monsoon/Accessorize, Boots, Waitrose, Oxford Street, Richmond Park...the Thames!! Jeez, I could go on forever and you might be from Liverpool for all I know! Anyway - it's a personal choice. I also like the ease with which you can travel to Europe and America - have done more travelling from England than I'll be able to afford from Australia.
Overall I think that long term, Australia is a better place to live for a variety of reasons - I can buy a house with a yard here and still be close to a city, it's (generally) safer, and I like the weather better. But everyone's different and your pros and cons might be totally varied from mine!
Meanwhile....it would take a brave man to take on London during the Olympics.....it's a mess during Wimbledon! I can't imagine......
Good luck! |

I lived in UK for a year when i was 6 years old. Know i'm 14 but I don't really miss Uk as it was quite gloomy and depressing during winter.. Not so sure about Australia. Gone thre once on holiday. If I had to pick I think I would choose Australia. Only if I could live in a very open space that is. |

It's a tough choice:
I live in Sydney because it's usually nice weather, it's relaxed, has good beaches, generally friendly people and my mum lives here (hurray for mum's cooking!)
I love London because it's more cosmopolitan, has more arts & culture, is close to Europe, and the British countryside & history are great.
But, both groups of people have some parts of society that show negative traits: deliberate stupidity, rudeness, racist attitudes, arrogance and ********* especially... Also, the Aussies can be quite homophobic; Brits have a superiority complex.
Aussies have a chip on their shoulder about Britain and the US and, in Sydney at least, don't know how to drive through roundabouts.
Brits have a chip on their shoulder about Australia (esp sport and the weather) and they can be a bit uptight.
I miss the London art & culture scene and being able to fly to Europe easily, but when I'm not in Australia, I miss the lifestyle, the ocean & the beaches... the heat, the cheap petrol, the great food, the mad wildlife (especially cockatoos and lorikeets), the open space, the smell of eucalyptus trees...
On balance, I'd rather be in Australia. |

I wouldn't mind visiting the UK though, But Aussies are nicer in my opinion. (I'm not insulting anyone, it's true) |

Australia any day!! My husband and I ispent 12 months in London when we first got married. It was so more crowded, and so cold in winter - I hated going to work in the mornings in the dark, and then going home again in the dark - very short days. Sunshine please. |

This is hard because I think the UK is so much more culturally orientated to music, fashion etc. I also really love the history and traditions and it's proximity to Europe. I would have to choose Australia though only because of the weather. This past winter in Sydney has convinced me of that. Even though it was sooooo cold, I knew that it would only be for a short time. But the thought of living in a country where it gets dark at 4.00pm and there is snow and wind and rain a lot of the time must be horrible. And even though it has been years since I have been to the UK, I remember the time it took in having to dress to go anywhere - and the expense. Whilst I was young that wasn't too hard and a bit novel, but when I visited many years later I used to nearly cry if I had to go out. And as much as I hate the heat here, overall the weather is more tolerable. |

I would choose Australia. I have lived here all my life and I would freeze in England! But in saying that I know quite a few people that have gone to live in England for a year and still haven't returned. They say it is great for earning and saving up money and them coming back here. I am still waiting for the "coming back" part though! |

I'm gonna go for the good ole' UK. I really love the weather. The cold and wet doesn't bother me. I like the traditions and the culture of it. I'd rather spend the day inside a cold house than on the beach or something. I don't know, maybe I'm just strange. No offense, but I like the British accents better. |
|

Where do we go from here?

Australia. I lived in the UK. And hated it. It really is overpriced and the weather is always cr@p. It's a better lifestyle in Australia. Cheaper, more comfortable, friendly people, better weather, and the education and healthcare system are on par with Britain.
The only good thing about Britain is it's so close to the rest of Europe so it's no big deal to fly to Spain for a week. To me, the UK is just an English speaking base for further travel into Europe. That's really the only good thing. That and the hot jam donuts for 10 p at Sainbury's. That's pretty much the only thing I miss.
Umm... Imelda: It's official, London is the most expensive city in the world (living cost wise) after Moscow and Tokyo...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_expensive_cities_for_expatriate_employees |

For me I would rather be at UK cause the next olympics is somewhere there and it would be fun but of course that is your decision. Australia and UK are somewhat alike in a way, they are both beautiful countries both clean and there a alot of beautiful sceneries at both countries so it's hard to chose! Anways I'd rather be at UK. If your going there better pack up lots of clothes and stay warm! |

The UK =
awful weather
no sand on the beaches and too cold anyway
awful people
dirty
dingy
drab
overcrowded
bad social problems
repressive class structure
unemployment
bad government
Australia =
great weather
magnificent beaches and many months to enjoy them in
friendly, laid back people
clean
bright
colourful
open spaces
very few social problems
everyone has equal opportunity
everyone who wants a job can get one
good government
Australia, hands down. |
