it is a very laid back and casual country, so only really bring casual clothes, unless you intend doing proper work and need something decent for it. Bring good footwear and hiking boots if you can, as there are lots of mountains and gorges to discover throughout the country. Social life is pretty cheap. when you go there, become a member of VIP Backpackers and you will lots of discount on accommodation in hostels and on transport as well. Travel as much as you can. There's so much to see and do and it depends on what you like. The Barrier reef is not to be missed. visit sydney, melbourne, perth, north queensland. Nothing exciting in adelaide. Sydney is quite expensive and nice hostels are sometimes hard to come by. I would advise coogee or manly to stay at and not bondi. Cape Tribulation in north queensland is just fabulous. it is a great country for adventure sports of all kinds. sailing around the whitsunday islands is quite cheap and another option for queensland. There are lots of wildlife sanctuaries around the country too if you like that.Have a ball and be careful. |

i dont know where most these cork heads that answered come from but, if you are a UK resident and you have a skill then you can register with seek.com (go to the Brits living in OZ section) we have a skills shortage at the moment, in fact we need about 270,000 skilled workers)
Some said go to NSW, well...New South Wales is the most expensive state in Australia, infact its rated as the most heavily taxed state in the world and Sydney is the most expensive city in the world, so if you looking to save a few pounds, apply for work in Queensland (if you want to be on the East Coast and see the Great Barrier Reef, Brissy, the whit sunday passage etc) or Perth ( if you want to be on the West Coast - its isolated over there, but its gorgeous and you'll get to experience the largest state in the world)
Remember your pound is worth approximately 2.5 x our dollar, and our cost of living is very cheap (compared to other western countries)
best to apply for work before you come (seek.com) and the employer will sponsor you while you're here and will let you know what visa's you'll require.
If you dont have a skill, there is also hospitality positions available on that site as well.
good luck mate |

As a visitor you will only be able to get a visa for about 3 months but if you apply for a Working Holiday visa you could stay for 12 months. Check this site http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/index.htm.
The cost of liviing would depend on where you were living. It would cost you more to live in Sydney or Melbourne than Perth but your lifestyle will be a large factor. A reasonable rule of thumb is if you earn around 1000 pounds a month in the UK you will need to earn $750 in Australia to maintain the same lifestyle.
It is estimated that an international student living in Sydney for 12 months would need approximately $16,000 (around 7,000 to 8,000 pounds) to cover expenses. This is probably conservative.
I would consider the Working Holiday option. |

Your best bet would to first choose a location, places like melbourne, sydney or the gold coast would probably be your best option (because they all rock) and be sure to get your work visa organised through the australian consulate. Other than airfare, costs would solely be based on you. Rents vary from city to city, will you share with others, or prefer to live alone? There are usually heaps of people advertising for share accomodation, check out the sydney morning herald (www.smh.com.au) or the herald sunn (www.news.com.au/heraldsun) but generally, you could find a great furnished house with one, two, three others for about AU$100-150 per week. or roughly 60-80 pounds. |

Don't go this year, there's a drought on and they're short on bananas. But if you do go, it's cheaper down in NSW but keep away from Melbourne. |

Look on the internet. It's not so easy to just move there. All your electronic stuff may not longer work, etc. Even DVD don't play in other parts of the world...do your research before considering such a big move. There is good surf there....I would like to move there myself! |
