I live in brisbane matty boy hehe and when its winter its really cold but probably not as cold as melb. Lol that place is like bonkers. When its cold its freezing and when its hot its scorching. At least where i live everything is moderate and predictable

Catherine
Its not warm all the time..

Geez..

I live in Sydney, and the winter was cold! Its spring now, its starting to warm up .. but there are a few cold days here and there..

Our weather is unpredictable, its not warm all the time..

Oh and by the way.. Our winters arent as cold as it gets in America...

Where I live, the lowest the temperature I recall is 2 degrees at night..

I live in Cairns, North QLD, basically our winter is minimum overnight 14 degrees Celsius and around 22 during the day.

Australia is very diverse and gets freezing 'outback' and very cold in Victoria.

Other users will give you their averages I'm sure on where they live.

I lived in Sydney and it wasn't very harsh. Some days the temperatures were single digits, but not bad. Average temperature would probably be able 12 or 13

I'm use to below 0 though.

It does depend where you live

I wouldn't ask me, i live in the sunniest state in Australia!

I live in Western Australia which is 1/3 of australia in size, it does not snow any were in this state, so in my opinion yes it is warm all year although it can get 'chilly' in winter.

Define harsh. No major city (or minor city) has permanent snow throughout winter. No car in Australia has a plug in block warmer. Winter tyres are unnecessary. We do not have blizzards. Except in the early morning jackets, coats, gloves, toques or beanies, scarves or anything else are unnecessary. Think Florida, not Wisconsin.

So it is not harsh, but it is chilly occasionally in the southern half.

In Melbourne it can get pretty harsh- the temperature stays under ten degrees for much of winter with very damp air, but you don't get that nice mild dry air that comes with the subzero temperatures.

But the cold only really lasts for the winter months and sometimes through to December, unlike some countries where it's only properly warm during the summer months.

Ozmaniac
Australia is a very large country so it's impossible to give a simple answer.

We don't have harsh winters anywhere.
It only snows in the mountains and there are no cities there.
It's warm in the tropical parts such as the Northern Territory, north Queensland and the north of Western Australia and gets gradually cooler as you go further south.
It rarely drops below 0C (32F) during the day anywhere (except in the mountains), even in the far south.
When Australians talk about a winter being cold, they don't know what they're talking about. People from the UK, most of Europe and North America would think our 'cold' was like fairly pleasant spring weather. It all depends on what you're acclimatised to.

EDIT:
Abbiii - if you think our winters are harsh, then you need to visit the north of the UK, Europe or North America in the depths of winter and see what harsh really means.

EDIT:
Matthew B - don't forget that the temperatures given in these answers are celcius, not farenheit. e.g. 2C = 35.6F and 10C = 50F

Some poeple are saying that we don't have harsh winters but depending on where you go it can be absolutely freezing. I used to live in Oberon which is only about 3 hours away from Sydney. It snows there and is one of the coldest places in NSW. While it's absoultely beautiful the cold is hell and it absolutely paralyses you sometimes.
You get cold winters along the East coast and Southern states

This winter was also our coldest winter in about a decade I think. Most places don't get snow, you'll only find it in the alps and some places in the South East but we do get it. Sydney can be quite cold as can many places in The South East and along the coast.

If you want a warm winter you'll have to go further north up to Queensland, Northern Territory and parts of WA.
