In Australian English, does the word "Feds" mean police?

About the only time you'll find the abbreviation used is in newspaper headlines.

Yes, it refers to the Australian Federal Police, although it's not a commonly used term and is seen, I think, as something of an Americanism.

I disagree with Tamara's comment that most Australians don't realise we have a federal police force. They're mentioned regularly on television news programmes, as well as newspapers, etc. Many people perhaps don't fully understand the role of our federal police, but I would be very surprised if I met an adult Australian who didn't know about the existence of the AFP.

oceangirl78
Yes,it does mean Federal Police. It depends on how the term is used.

jennifer h
Yes but we have federal Police as well as just the ordinary police

Ella
Yesss.....but, I have never heard anyone I know use that term. It is only in American movies and shows that it is used.
If you said "feds" to me, I would assme you meant the police, but would also assume you were either American, had just visited America or had been watching a lot of tv :P

In Australian English the word "Feds" refers to the Federal Police. Each State has its own state police governed by that state. The Federal police are governed by the Federal Government in Canberra and normally are associated with handling crimes that break Commonwealth (Federal) laws. These kinds of crimes include people smuggling, terrorism, drug trafficking, fraud, electronic crimes, sex exploitation of minors and Environmental crime. They also act as the local police for the Australian Capital Territory.

Yep sure does.

dwetzlerbed
Never seen or heard the word used in association with Australian police or anything, only in American movies and tv shows.

tamara m
No, it is an American vernacular term, most Australians don't even realize we have a federal police force, the ones that do are either highly educated, or have spent time in either the ACT or NT which do not have a state police force.

Billybean
Never really heard or seen the term used in Australia other that in old American movies or perhaps current American slang..
