Australians would riot if the government tried charging to go on beaches or restricting access. It is one of the things I hate about going to other countries and seeing areas of beaches closed off to private hotels, citizens or private operaters and people paying to go sit on an area of beach (usually packed in like sardines). Luckily we have a massive coastline and only 21 million people to share it.
Occasionally the environment department will bar people to enter a sensitive area eg. penguin colony or dune regeneration etc. but that is it!

Unless I am mistaken, beaches in Australia are "crown land" or belong to the federal or state government and cannot be bought by any person or corporation.

You'd have to ask a legal person to find out whether that is correct, but that is what I was told years ago.

If someone wanted to charge for the use of "their" beach, Australians would probably tell them to rack off or would just go elsewhere.

No, I don't. I couldn't believe it when in 1995 I couldn't even walk on the beach in L.A. without paying - needless to say, I went without.

They already do by default. Car parking charges are levied for parking at beach access points.

our government in England, may do that yet as they keep coming up with stupid inane ideas for all sorts of things.

Not yet, but be quick cause I think that we are voting on it in 6 months.

I live in melbourne in australia and i have never ever heard of being charged to go to a beach. I dont know about other countries but i am fairly sure in Australia all beaches are free. If you are planning to visit beaches in Australia Cairns and up north have the most beautiful beaches and the Great Barrier Reef - all free!

The Silver Foo Dog
I have never heard of anyone trying to charge a person to go to the beach, unless it is artificial. But in Australia you will not be charged to go to the beach unless a new law comes through without us knowing, and if a law like that did go through then every politician involved in the law would be lynched. =D

In South Africa, the town of East London, on the east coast, several years ago you had to pay to go to one of the beaches there, only one. The others you didn't have to pay, but then again, the other beaches were not patrolled with life guards.

Spy Guy
Never, well in Oz anyway. Not all beaches are owned by the Government, some wealthy waterfront homeowners own their own (but usually small) beaches for their homes or apartment blocks.
