Is 1400 Australian dollars an ok amount of money?

I saw this one job in Australia which provided about 1400 AUD a month... Is that considered an ok job or is that like a minimum wage job? I guess I'm wondering how expensive it is to live in Australia... would 1400 a month be considered a low class, medium class or higher class wage?

If you are talking $1,400 a month, forget it. - you would pay the rent and that's it!

You can get that in a weekly wage.

The average weekly wage in Australia is now $1,147.20 (as from Nov 2008)
See http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/money/story/0,26844,24645555-5015825,00.html for more details.

This website is good for showing the wages in different areas of work

The absolute minimum legal wage in Australia is $2356.38 per month ($543.78 per week) and is barely enough to live on. At that rate ($2356 per month) you would be considered a very low paid worker and would probably qualify for some government benefits such as a health care card for even more heavily subsidised health care than usual.

Australia is a fairly expensive country to live in and it would be difficult to have a decent standard of living in most of our cities for anything much under $3500 per month and you're not considered to be earning a high class wage until you get to something well over twice that amount.

Are you sure that was per month?
That's much, much less than the minimum wage.
No, it's a pitiful amount of money for a months full time work.

$350 a week!!

oh dear, that wont pay rent in some cities and even if it did, then you would be streached for food! And fuel is not going to be this cheap forever, and bills etc....thats shocking.

use that website as a live currency converter. You can convert ANY two currencies.

Is this for a full time position? If so, then yeah, that's low. However if this is a contract with fewer hours, which would mean you could have a second job then it would be ok. Currently I pay 240 rent per fortnight, so it would be fine for me! lol. But Im a student, so anything sounds good to me!

That would be a very low wage, like below the poverty line...$2000 a month would be livable depending on where you want to live...Sydney or Melbourne you would probably need $3000 to live comfortably.

I live on the Gold Coast QLD my rent is $320 per week for a 1 bedroom flat (shared with my boyfriend), I spend $200 per week on groceries, my power bill is about $170 a quarter, I have a small car that costs about $40 fuel a week if i drive a lot.

Australia is a 1st world country so the cost of living is quite high, not as expensive as say England. Housing prices are really high in capital cities, both to buy or rent. Sydney is actually more expensive than New York.

I would say you defiantly need at least $2000 per month & even that is rather low...Im a receptionist (everyone knows we're poor!) & Im on $2720 a month.

Dan
Are you sure it's a month? That should be the approximate amount Australians should earn in a week, not a month. Forget about eating and shopping if you do take that job. It may not even be enough for rent.

Mel
That would be illegal, its far below the minimum wage. If you are correct and that's what they are offering a month then they are scamming you.
