Places to live in Australia are as different form each other as those in America.
Our cities while fewer and smaller than the US , regional centres and country towns are smaller and more isolated but still great places.
Standard of living is relatively the similar, from my observation Australia is better if you are not as well off, better social security and hospitals won't turn you away if you don't have insurance
You'll find many of the large US companies or their equivalent here, Holdens for GM etc, and have to get used to some of out products TimTams, Vegemite.
We don't tip.
Weather in general hotter (winter doesn't consist of snow in most places just cooler). We are a free democratic country with all the benefits and faults that come with that. At times we don't understand some of the US institutions and attitudes - hand guns for instance
Generally open and friendly people, and my American friends who have visited really like it here |

I lived in Australia for 6 years and would go back in a heartbeat. I found Aussies very similar to Canadians (which I am) with regard to their sense of humour and laid back lifestyle. Aussies are very welcoming to people coming from other countries but in truth they appear to have low tolerance for Americans. Their Prime Minister hooked up with President Bush while I was living there and I could see and feel a real difference in attitudes after that.
Australia is a very expensive place to live compared to America and I don't think the wages are as high but you do get 4 weeks paid holidays each year regardless of how long you've been employed.
By America, I'm assuming you mean the U.S.A. ..... although I have some friends and family living across the States and have been to some lovely places, I would have absolutely NO desire to live there......on any terms. |

being an Australian living in the US for a little over a year now, i can honestly say that if i had the decision to make over again i wouldnt have bothered moving out to the US...but it was something that i had to do given the opportunity to find out for myself...
cant wait to get home in a few months for a holiday, and i have to wonder if i will get on the plane to go back to the US...we will see!!! |

But Why??

I lived in America for a number of years and ran a business there, it has its good points and great sights, but I found everyone in your pocket constantly and it is not a free country at all. I couldnt wait to get back to Australia. |

Personally, I find Australia much better than America to live. The people there are friendlier, more multi-cultural, as laid-back as rumored to be, and the climate is more beautiful and inviting. I'm a lesbian, and I've received far more glares in San Francisco than I ever did in the middle of nowhere in Australia. People are a lot more tolerant and mind their own business down under.
The only things that are better about the USA are that we have cheaper things like DVDs and video games, we have "better" food (aka more greasy and fattening), and housing is a bit cheaper (but not necessarily).
I recommend that if you are considering moving out of the US, you do it fast before the dollar drops any lower and you can't get anything in currency exchange. Also, if you want to see what Australia is like but you can't afford just to visit first - go up to Canada and pretend it's 95 degrees and you're on the beach. That's pretty close. |

Well, seeing as I've only lived in Australia all my life I can't really compare it to the US. But I can tell you that it is pretty good!! No country is immune to issues like politics, racism and violence and Australia is no exception. But I think we are probably one of the least affected countries and deal with it pretty well. On a lighter note, it IS very beautiful, people are very friendly and there a lot of opportunities. |

Yes I believe it is in most respects. I've never been to the US or anywhere else for that matter, but would like to see Canada one day I hear it's more like Australia in terms of attitudes humour etc, however, I would like to go to the US as well. |

Hello. I have lived in the same town for alot of years. My brother went and lived in America and cannot believe it as he regrets it as you have to pay for hospitals and doctors and here it is free. There is about 50 different things i can tell you. America has about 250 million people where here we have 24 million people. Australia is a bigger country then the States. Amazing hey. If you need to know alot more just email me and i will be happy to help you. Good Luck. |

I'm Australian. I think it depends on what you want in life. If you want a life of laid back people, humor, multi- cultral lifestyle, then Australia is a good place to live. But if you don't like the lifestyle, well then i guess Australia is'nt a good place to live.
What i would susgest though, is to come down under for a holiday, and try it out. That way your not actually living here, but holidaying. By the end of the holiday, you should know if you do or don't won't to live here. |

Australia is a great place to live by anyones standard, it all comes down to your mindset, what expectations you have, if they are high, you could be disappointed, if they are low, you will be surprised |

No. For one, There are no 'rea'l & 'distinct' seasons in Australia, in almost all cities you dont experience the beautiful transitions from winter to spring, spring to summer, summer to autumn and autumn to winter like alot of US cities such as Denver, Chicago, Washington D.C . Australians like to say that they have 4 seasons and that they actually have a winter but as a matter of fact it should only be called a relatively 'cooler' period.
Second, Lets say you take a picture of a typical Australian setting, the outback or country for example. This picture can literally represent almost the whole of the Australian landscape with its dead or dying flora i.e brown and yellow grass and its non-arable and scotched land it can really be an eye score to many.
And thirdly, with its 21 million population it doesnt really qualify to be a world power or a significant country like the US. Take for example if hypothetically we woke up tommorow and Australia lay in ruins the world isn't really going to be stopped dead in their tracks unlike if it was the US. Of course the global economy would probably go down for awhile and trading lines would need to be rerouted but the bottom line is that the world will be unchanged or recover almost instaneously. In contrast the world does revolve around the US and not Australia. The US is like the axis of rotation for all the nations circling about it and without the axis of rotation = all the nations would idyllically go spinning out of control and inevitably transform in to ruins. All more simply just think of the US as the sun and all other nations the planets revolving around it. And without the warmth or light of the Sun (US), the planets(nations) will drastically turn into ruins. |
