Australia is a country and a continent and an island.
However Australia the country is NOT an island because Australia the country is composed of several islands e.g. Christmas Island, Norfolk Island, etc. (Some would include Tasmania in the list of islands but the jury's still out on this).
The island Australia is considered the largest in the world and the continent Australia is considered the smallest in the world. |

Australia is all three. The National Geographic World atlas shows that it is a country, and it originally was part of Pangea until it broke away and became its own continent. In addition, there is a great song in Australia called "My Island Home" about living in Australia. |

It's like Gilligan's Island. A speck on the world map. At least that is how I see what Americans think.
What they dont see is Australians fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq along side the Americans. |

A continent and a country. This is because it is not connected or very close to any other large amounts of land, so it must be a lone continent. It is the only continent that has only one country; austrailia |
