Is Australia getting way behind the rest of the world in internet tech?

Yeh we have fallen behind in that area because John Howard has been so focused on improving the economy, internet tech etc. has been ignored. Labour has proposed new high speed internet tech if they are elected but I still think there is a long way to go.

To the rest of the world... I dun think so.

I have been to several South-East Asian countries and I know how slow their ADSL is. Dun even mention abt cable or wireless broadband.

However I do know that compared to Hong Kong, US and I think Japan as well, where they have T1, ours is still behind. Again, I'm not sure abt UK or European.

I read a leaflet posted by Telstra a few months ago during the heated debate between Labor & Liberal, and Telstra accusation that the ACCC making things hard for Telstra to improve internet infrastructure. There was a graph comparing Australia's internet with other developed countries in the world and I think Australia ranked 16, below Korea (from memory). So, is this just a scare tactics from Telstra? God knows ;)

But Why??

We are actually ahead. We have a new technology at present, we can actually feel in our bodily functions questions coming from abroad. Its called Wallydetect, for instance if you are about to recieve a question from an American about drop bears or something, you have a heads up display and a LED readout flashin red incoming!!! Its quite unique. So to most Australians, internet is quite prehistoric.

No! We have some of the best computer technicians in the world. We are the best in micro surgery and heart surgery, you think we can screw around with a few chips and wires? You should ask the UK that question, most of them dont know what wireless means.

Australia is definitely falling behind in internet technology, indeed we've got one of the worst connections of all the developed nations.

I studied a bit about the information superhighway in an economics course at uni last semester and as far I can remember, our poor internet service is because of a general political disinterest in the matter. John Howard needs to be looking at the information sector and letting more funds flow through to there so that Australia doesn't fall behind the rest of the world.

Maybe internet tech isn't the highest priority for Australia.
