Is Australia really that dangerous?

Ok first of all I don't believe anything on fictional tv shows. Second of all I've been watching this one drama from Australia(made in australia, originated from australia, no other country). Anyway lately it's been mostly about tragedy. Death, murder, accidents, robberies, kidnap and rape.

I just want to know one thing. Is Australia as violent and high crime as this show makes it? That there's a bad guy lurking in every corner? Someone asked me these questions and I dunno what to say.

This show isn't even a crime like show. It's a drama about farming.

and there's stalkers in the show too and terrorists.

How good is McLeod's Daughters!! Its my favourite show!

and no its not a very accurate portrayal of farm life in Austraila, people tend not to have a near death experience on a weekly basis!

Its a fairly safe country, I haven't met a bad guy yet!

It's a drama about farming. - and it shows "a bad guy lurking in every corner" ? LOL

Australia is NOT dangerous. Yes, we have crime - just like any other country but there are VERY few places where it would be dangerous to walk down the streets and these places are well known so people don't make a point of going there. Yes, violent crime CAN happen to you but it is rare and it's not like people are so scare no one goes out at night.

Where I live, I can go walking into town and back at midnight and I will be totally safe.

I lived in a small rural town, in Australia, for 16 years.
During that time we had one murder (a fist fight that went wrong and one fellow died).
Two rapes both perpetrated by out of towners passing through.
We had a few break-ins by bored teenagers and a couple of cars were stolen.
It wasn't hard to break into houses or steal cars because nobody locked their houses or cars. The car keys were usually in the ignition or cleverly hidden behind the sunvisor. You didn't have to be a genius to open the door and start the car, no criminal skill required.

TV shows are made that way to keep the viewers interest.
If all you saw was the day to day running of a farm and the goings on in a rural community you'd switch channels pretty damned quick or die of boredom.

I wonder if you remember the American show "Murder She Wrote". Every where Jessica Fletcher went there was at least one murder (which she was involved in).
I'm sure that doesn't happen in any crime writers life but who would want to see dear old Jessica just living her normal life. It wouldn't really make for rivetting viewing. Would it?

No, Australia is not as dangerous as they make it out to be.
Any show on 'TV' or the Movies is hyped up, it has to be .... to make it exciting for people to watch.

If we believed everything we see on shows/movies on America, no one would visit there! - That is the most dangerous place to live!

tuppenybitz
if we were to believe all the shows made in the US no one would ever go there
you are watching a DRAMA totally made up storyline
Australia has crime like anywhere else but it isn't as bad as you think
if you live in the US then Australia's crime is a piddle in the ocean in comparison

HAHA.. australia is safe.. America is much more dangerous. Guns arn't legal in australia for one.. and 2 soap operas have nothing better to do than have stalkers and murderers at every turn.

busuttil09
I have lived in Australia all my life and I don't believe it is that dangerous. There are the high crime areas as with every country but there is not a bad guy lurking in every corner.

Nah, Australia isnt really that dangerous...i mean everywhere you go you're going to find assholes.
Australian dramas are really over-board on that kinda thing, esspecially shows like home and away and neighbours...they just do it for the ratings.

a drama about farming .. McLeod's daughters by any chance ..

we're fine .. we're not perfect... we're not crime free ... but look at it this way ....

When there was a fatal shooting as there was in Melbourne this year .. It was NATION WIDE NEWS ... does that happen in many other nations.
Then there was an accidental shooting just the other day .. a little boy accidently shot his sister after his father put a gun down after he had to kill a sheep...AGAIN nationwide news..

we have our INCIDENCES .like a few years back .. all the under-world figures in Melbourne started bumping each other off .. went through a stage of nearly being one killing every three weeks ... but that was the bad guys killing the bad guys . .the majority of us are 99% safe all the time

EDIT: just on what elizabeth below wrote ... I also grew up in a small country town.. pop.2100 ... i had never heard of a murder in the town's history when I lived there ... and the ONLY murder since occured when carnival people came through for the local show .. one man from the show murdered one woman from the show,
I think in the whole district .. i know of only four murders ( one at the river in Tocumwal, a female camper was murdered.. her killer never found . .suspect Mr Stinky) , the murder of a young couple near Jerilderie .. their killer was their insurrance agent who spent their payments and when they went to make a claim they found they weren't insurred .. so HE killed them before they could turn him in and the murder I wrote of initially.. and that's over decades.....

No Australia isnt Dangerous, yes we do get some violents but its the same as every other country.

whatsername
no australia isnt like that, its just like any other place, it has its fair share or crime and stuff...its nothing like what the show says.btw what show was it?

._.
DANGEROUS?... No. We are probably safer than most - like all countries it depends on where you live as everywhere as their trouble spots.
Not good idea to believe everything you hear and see on the ole tele.
....might be why they call them "dramas" shows.
& the bottom line for them and their producers is that it is all about who will get the highest ratings.
Hence alot of things are over exagerated.
