Yes Canberra is the official capital of Aus. It is part of the ACT (australian captial territory) although many would consider Sydney to be Australia's capital, it's not.

Many foreigners believe Sydney or Melbourne to be the capital of Australia. But you are correct in saying that Canberra is the capital city of Australia!

When deciding on a capital city, story goes that there was a 'fight' between Sydney and Melbourne as to who would receive the honors.. so to fix the problem, a decision was made to create a city between the two and call this the capital. And so Canberra was built! =)
