Is Melbourne a good city to live in?

My partner and I are thinking of moving to Melbourne early next year. Is Melbourne a good city to live in? Does it get really cold like everyone says? We want to live in a place that's fun, has heaps of cool restaurants/cafes & theatre shows etc and most importantly friendly people. We have lived in Sydney, Cairns & Wellington so looking for our next new city to call home. Really appreciate your feedback.

Thanks :)

Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply to me. I think I'll give Melbourne a go. :)

I actually live in Brisbane, but I believe Melbourne to be by far the best city in Australia to live in. The weather's not nearly as bad as people say it is and the city itself is simply marvellous. The dining out and night life are fantastic, there are heaps of cultural pursuits of every conceivable type, the people are friendly, the shopping is by far the best in Australia, the Yarra Valley wineries are close and if you're a sports fan, there's simply no where else to live - I could go on for ages. Move there and you won't ever want to leave. I'd be there like a shot if I could possibly get away from my commitments here.

PS
Anyone who says Melbourne is a dump obviously doesn't appreciate the finer things of life.

Dude if the Wellington you mentioned is the one in New Zealand you'll be able to cope with winter in Melbourne

Yeah!
Melbournes really good.
In winter its cold and windy so it's really nice to snug up at home and watch tv with a cup of milo.

And in summer time its good as to go to the beach! We experience some hot weather too reaching the late 30's on most summer days.

It really depends if you'd like to live in a quiet spot or in the centeral of melbournce city.

If you'd like to live in a house in a neighbourhood where theres shops, resteraunts and just local places, then i suggest you choose a surburb.

If you like the whole entertainment idea and want to live with heaps of attractions around you, choose a place in the city. They have absolutley everything there! but i may say, its really expensive in the city.

Have a good time moving :)

Piltdown Man
Lived here all me life, and I think it's pretty dam good. Freezing cold at the moment, though. But all in all, I'd recommend it. Come on down, you won't be sorry!

It WAS the most liveable city in the world a couple of years ago!

tlkr_11
In Winter it gets really cold, otherwise the weather is alright.

I must warn you that the public transport system is really bad because the Government won't do anything. The trains in peak hour are very overcrowded and often not on time. Trams are generally ok, but in peak hour are usually very overcrowded as well.

Also there are some suburbs to avoid (e.g. Broadmeadows, Footscray etc).

I have lived in Melbourne for many years. My advice would be to move to Perth in Western Australia, I have family there and it is a very fun and exciting state to live in. Or Brazil
Good luck

personally i LOVE melbourne.
it's amazing.
but you have to like the city.
it is cold, but only in winter.
i live on the gold coast so it's a wonderful change.

you can live anywhere in melbourne and still
only have a shot tram trip into the city.
there is so much to see & do in melbourne,
about a million cafees!
i love the cafes near the crown cousino.

i think living in the more quiet, peaceful out skirts
of melbourne will be nice, esspecially if you have family.

hope i was a help.

I love Melbourne. People are friendly. The weather is not extreme. not humid like Cairns. more laid back than Sydney. Southbank is nice with good restaurants. QV market is clean. Beaches aren't too far away. just so many goodies...maybe i'm biased :)

Sex Gun
Melbourne is good and beautiful city, but they is fundamentalist Muslims living there.

The rents and house prices in Melbourne have become very expensive, because of housing shortages. Due to petrol prices, public transport is really packed and can't keep up with demand.

It depends on how you mean good. Anyway, you've heard of what Underbelly is based on so that's something bad but if you are a shopper, you have chosen the right place. It is wonderful and the landscape is the best.

Definitely not, it is a dump.

How about moving to America like everybody else. Nobody wants to live in Australia besides the marsupials.
