Is Outback Steakhouse a good representation of Australian food? |
i have no idea how it is in other countries but in america we are bombarded by horrible chain restaurants (don't get me started on fast food places). and the thing i've noticed about outback steakhouse is that, it's pretty much the same as any other crappy chain steakhouse. other than the decor, i see/taste nothing about the food that says australian. i could be wrong but to me it's seems about as asutralian as taco bell or del taco is mexican. |

Outback steakhouse is an American chain with only a handful of restaurants in Australia.
All chains are the same, its reminds me of chilli's.
Its all just over commercialised, with no real native influence, except that of whichever warehouse sells that same decor.
In terms of Aussie food, we eat the same as the rest of the world, we are largly multicultural so that includes our food, we suit all tastes.
Traditional aussie foods are; vegemite, pavlova, lamingtons, meat pie, a bbq, kangaroo (not overly common), tim tams. Australia's favourite food would probably be either a steak on the bbq or seafood (not on the bbq). Our seafood restaurants make the best food. |

Australian cuisine is a fusion of all the cuisines of the cultures of all of the people who have come here. It is basically European, but there are influences from southern and south east Asia, Japan, the Middle East and North Africa. It is an exciting and innovative cuisine, something that it sounds that Outback Steakhouses are not.
American food is crap compared to what I eat every day in Australia. One of the things that is seriously crap is the absence of cheap and cheerful tasty ethnic cuisine. You either pay a fortune for fine dining or eat in chain diners full of unimaginative, stodgy, nutritionally bereft stuff that no Australian would willingly accept. |

No, it's just a takeout place. It is a chain, they have other steakhouses in other names as well. |

Too bad it's just another chain of restaurant. See, companies just hype things up to capture the taste of the consumers. It's just making another flavor out of something that's been all the while there. You get what I mean? |

Well, i've never been to that place.. But here in Australia, its a multicultural country.. and we pretty much eat anything..
We dont have taco bell in Australia, we used to, but it closed down because it wasnt a success... You can keep your tacos. |

Considering it's not even available in Australia, I'd have to say no.
I doubt you can really get a good representation of any nationalities food from nasty chain restaurants in any case. |

It's not supposed to be a representation of Australian food but of their way of life. The whole "No Worries" and "No Rules, Just Right" thing is where the Australian stuff comes for. Other then that it's just another steakhouse. We do have a lot of Australian beers and wines though. |

After living in Pittsburgh for four years, I can safely say that Outback Steakhouse is as Australian as French Fries are French. Even the decor is wrong -- more reminiscent of the Texas than The Land Downunder.
For a true Australian dining experience... go to the MCG to watch an Australian Rules footy match (REAL footy ... LOL), and eat a Four & Twenty Pie with White Crow tomato sauce (NOT ketchup!), and wash it down with a good, cold VB (Victoria Bitter... beer). And if Collingwood loses the footy match (and we don't care who beats them), the day will be perfect. LOL |
