Is Perth a great place to raise a family or should I broaden my options? |
I'm a fire fighter but also a qualified technician in the oil and gas industry. |

Perth is a great place to raise a family. It's a really quiet city and it is very safe. It does get boring for people between 18 and 35 because the night life isn't that great. We need fire fighters, especially now as there are lots of bush fires at this time of year.
Here is a website that can help you decide: www.westernaustralia.com |

Perth is absolutely the BEST place to raise a family in Australia.
With your employment skills there are also lots of opportunities available to you.
Housing is a bit pricy at the moment but the prices are plateuing at the moment.
Most of the newer suburbs are all "self contained" with schools, shops, parks etc.
Hope this helps. |

I was raised in Perth - I'm assuming you mean in Australia. The thing I loved about it was the easy access to amenities such as shops, cinemas and beaches and the wonderful warm weather. I had a great childhood riding my bike around and playing at the park. Perth is very cosmopolitan but has great outdoors experiences too and I think it is much better for children than a boring small town or an overwhelming big city.
The downfall was that I ended up moving to Sydney to pursue my career, so perhaps consider that your children may move away. |

I would say that anyone coming to Perth that doesn't have kids is at a disadvantage! It opens up the potential for social interaction (making friends).
Don't expect lateral entry to firefighting to be easy if you were thinking of it, although things may be improving soon. However, there should be plenty of opportunity in oil/gas with outfits like Woodside. |

ive heard perth is really nice and clean so it would seem like a good place to raise a family. or try adelaide, cos SA could probably use you in one of the new mining areas theyre getting going and housing is cheaper than perth. but still nice. |

yes! very much! perth is a family friendly place, where all the amenities for a growing family is provided. daycares, kindy schools, parks with playgrounds are all over perth.
there are also good schools and universities here.
the crime rate is so0o0o0 low.
it's stress free living here with no reason to rush all the time. |

Great place to raise a family, it's friendly and the weather is great. It's the powerhouse of the rest of the country, the economy is booming from the reseources sector, and there are lots of jobs about.
Crime is relatively low, compared to a lot of other capital cities, and the city is relatively clean. Most inter-state visitors comment on how clean Perth is.
On the negative side, the average age old most people in Perth is relatively high (aging population) and it is a very conservative city. We have only just got the ability to buy alcohol from bottle shops on Sunday, however Sunday trading is still illegal (except in precincts that are designated tourist precincts, (Rockingham and Mandurah), which are a long way from anywhere).
Daylight savings has only just been bought in, and is on a 3 year trial, from Dec 06 - Dec 09, whether it stays will be the result of a referendum closer to the end of the trial period.
I don't like your chances of becoming a firefighter over here, but it's worth a shot. You'll probably have more chance of getting into the oil and gas industry, which means a good wage, but you may have to FIFO (fly in, fly out), which means that you will not see you're family as much as you may like.
If you can the negatives and accept it for it's clean air and beauty, then it's a pretty good place to live. |
