Sydney is not the safest place in Australia, but it is quite safe by most definitions.

There is nowhere in Australia or New Zealand that has the social problems of South Africa. I'd suggest you reconsider your criteria for where to move to. You'd be better off basing it on climate preferences, employment opportunities, and whether you have any pre-existing friendships with people that have moved to or otherwise live in any given city. When moving to a new place, an existing social network is one of the most important things to have.

Oh, and Sydney is in the grip of a major housing shortage. You can barely rent anywhere affordable and not have 50 other people inspecting the same premises and overbidding you/offering to pay a year's rent in advance/offering a bribe to the estate agency employee. Melbourne and Canberra are almost as bad. You need to consider housing availability and affordability as well.

As a whole, Australia is quite safe. I feel quite safe walking around on my own during the day and with a couple of friends at night. I have never personally witnessed any violence or crime or anything like that in my 22 years.

A regional city may be better then Sydney though, you hear about a lot more happening in Sydney and other capital cities on the news. Somewhere like Wollongong may suit you, only 1.5 hours south of Syd.

Sydney is quite a safe place, I can't comment on NZ cities. Sydney has adequate police forces and security on public transport has improved in recent years. Most people feel safe having their families reside, work and school in Sydney.

Why stop at Sydney, though? As mentioned above, Sydney is in a desperate housing shortage crisis which means the amount people have to pay for rent has skyrocketed. Buying homes is also ridiculously expensive. Most of New South Wales (and Australia for that matter) is intricately linked by rail and major roads, so if you do your research you could perhaps move to rural or industrial towns where housing prices are CONSIDERABLY lower and more job opportunities exist.

All of Australia is safe, I would feel OK about walking anywhere in Australia by myself, even at night, although I would avoid dark back streets in that situation. I don't live in NZ, but it is safe too and very similar to Australia. Like Mel I have never seen a violent crime or felt genuinely threatened, and the only thing I have ever had stolen is my outdoor bin.

Sydney is a great city, I love it. There are many South Africans living in the St Ives area of Sydney, but that is a very expensive area.

As for Sydney, it's safe but I wouldn't call it SAFEST. In the newspaper, they say some people ROB children...but they need a parent to stay with them...well I wouldn't call ROB but I would call it KIDNAPPED! I don't know much about NZ but I think it would be pretty safe!!
Also, Sydney is pretty fun because at New Years, you could watch the fireworks at 9:00pm or 12:00am! There is also Luna Park.

Wow anything sounds better than what has happened to you - im so sorry to hear of your losses and the hard things you have been through. Sydney is nice and that kind of stuff rarely happens but it would be safer to move to a small beachy town where crime is basically non existent. Anything along the qld coast is breathtakingly beautiful.

Sydney is safe, but keep out of the trouble areas. The problem areas are Kings Cross, Redfern, Blacktown, Lakemba, Bankstown and Chinatown.

PS you wont be alone, my neighbour is South African.

Sydney is safe but i wouldn't say the safest.. All of Australia is quite safe I live in Victoria and thats a very safe place to live in I believe...
Sydney is quite a nice to place to live in though..

I've lived in Sydney, Australia and Auckland, New Zealand. There's a great little suburb in Sydney called St Ives. There is a high percentage of South Africans there and the supermarket also caters for anyone who needs Kosher foods.

In both countries though, I know South Africans who have moved because of the violence as well. I don't know any that prefer SA (in terms of safety).

Sydney is more likely to be warmer though! I find Auckland cold, and it's in the North island of NZ.

Good Luck with it! If you need any help or info on Sydney or Auckland just email me! :)

Having lived in both Sydney and Brisbane, I would say that the general Brisbane area is safer than Sydney, but other places may be even safer.

However, compared to some parts of South Africa, you could pick the most unsafe place in Australia, and feel totally safe, comparatively speaking.
