Is Uluru (Ayers Rock) really worth the trip? |
Or are there other things just as spectacular to see in Australia (apart from the obvious Sydney icons like bridge and opera house). |

It's absolutely stunning. Great trip. My wallpaper is a picture I took of the Uluru. Can't get enough of it.
The only down sides I can think of is:
1) You're encouraged not to climb it. Not that I mind, but some people like to get 'up close and personal'. My memory's a bit rusty; I think you can climb it if you want to, but you are strongly discouraged to. By the tour guides as well.
2) The heat. Ohhhhhh. Myyyyyyy.
But its a gorgeous view, and you can go on tours in other places near the rock. The other places are really interesting too. There's nothing quite like it.
It's totally worth the trip. So get your comfy shoes on, slap on lotsa sunscreen, grab a camera and a big hat and sunnies (and magazine to use as a fan) and have a hell of a good time :D |

Anyone, particularly an Australian, who says that it's just a 'big rock' and so what, etc is a cretin.
I travelled around Australia for a year and the red centre was towards the end of the trip, after all the spectacles in Qld, SA, WA, NT etc. The sight of the rock is awe inspiring. Photographs etc do no justice whatsoever to its size and beauty. Also the Olgas. Any Aussie who visits and doesn't get a catch in the throat shouldn't call himself an aussie.
If you can still tour around the rock (my trip/s were many years ago) do so, to see the rock water pools, caves, carvings, paintings etc. |

Yup, it's worth the trip. It's quite spectacular. The surrounding landscape is also quite brilliant, so definitely add it to you list of things to do. Sunset or sunrise (I forget which) is amazing over Ayers rock - great photo opportunity. Don't expect it to be quiet though - even though it's in the middle of nowhere there will be tourists everywhere! The rest of the outback is pretty remote though so you'll at least get some time away from it all.
But remember, whatever you do, DON'T CLIMB IT. It's really disrespectful to the Aboriginal people who consider Ayers rock to be sacred - tourists climbing on it is the equivalent of me jumping on your mother's tombstone. People still climb it regardless, but have some decency and admire it from the ground.
Hope that helps! |

If you're heading that way - ABSOLUTELY!!! The problem with it though is there isn't much else to do while you're there. I recently traveled with QANTAS from Queensland to Western Australia and they had a flight that stopped at Ayers Rock for 5 hours. It was enough time to have a quick look in town and choose to do a camel ride, motorbike ride or helicopter ride around Ayres rock and the Olgers. We did the helicopter ride and it was fantastic!!!
If you wanted to climb the rock, you'd need to stay overnight. |

It is worth the trip because it is a natural Australian icon as is Kata Tjuta(the Olgas). It is nice to see the rock and gain an Indigenous perspective about the history and significance of the area. |

yeh definitely. thats true outback australia. cities are all the same.
other recommendations - north qld (port douglas), tasmania (all of it), and the murray river in sa. |

It would be in my top 3. I'd LOVE to visit, especially to spend some time with the Aboriginees (sp). |

I would love to visit Uluru! And there are many many places in Australia to visit that are way better than the man made icons (Though the Big Coat Hanger is pretty spectacular and also worth a climb.....). Try, Olgas, Great Barrier Reef, Great Ocean Road, Ningaloo (where the whale sharks migrate up the coast each year), Horizontal Falls, Kakadu just for a few ideas. The downfall is you'd need 6 months over here to see everything due to the travelling required!!
Happy choosing!! |
