Alexandra

Is australia considered to be made up of steve irwin type clones only?

I think it is incredibly sad that i even have to ask this, but what do non aussies think of australians?
I can't tell you how many conversations i've had with americans who believe that we ride to school in kangaroos and that we all swim with crocs and live in 'the outback' like crocodile dundee.

It's a scary notion, personally i've never seen the outback and i live on the sunshine coast where the only crocs are in zoo's. please tell me that everyone doesn't hold this view.
Additional Details
Thank you veronica!! I'm not the only one that this happens too.

That's just a silly view.
We all know you play the didgeridoo like Rolf Harris, sing like Kylie, and dress up like the guys from "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert".

I don't. I've not yet been to Australia but I hope to visit one day soon.
I love almost all Australian movie stars and love the way they keep connected to one another. Its sad that many Americans don't care to look past their noses. Don't feel bad. A lot of Americans who live in big cities like New York think that people who live outside of there walk on dirt roads and don't know what cable tv is. Its an ignorant pride that shows how small minded they are. Jay Leno on The Tonight Show regularly picks people like these off the street to ask them questions about politics and geography. He never fails to find these ignoramuses. They can't name the Vice President, don't recognize important people in current events and don't know simple geographic facts they should have learned in 3rd grade. Everyone does not hold their views.

The only reason Americans think that is because that's all they know about Australia. They know you have kangaroos and the "outback" so they just assume. Just like what non-Americans think about America -- they think we're all fat, lazy money hogs that have terrible manners. Not all of us are like that -- it's a stereotypical thing. Don't take it personally kay?

Just so you know, I know you have cars and cities and stuff like that so why ride kangaroos to school? Sounds like fun though... lol.

I don't often come across many people that think we keep roos as pets, and are Steve Irwin knock - offs.
Most of the misconceptions about Australia, that I find people have is that our wildlife are brutal killers.
Apparently our spiders and snakes move into our houses, and hunt us down looking for a quick and easy feed, and our sharks .... they don't eat fish, they live solely on humans.
I have to say though, I find it humerous, some of the things that people come up with, like, did you know that all our spiders are the size of dinner plates, and they hide in our houses waiting to eat us??

Yes, and apparently we all say blimey, crickey, g'day mate.

I can't stand it, I'm American and I can't stand it. Australia has always been my favorite country and I remember being made fun of when I talked about wanting to go there. Someone said I wouldn't be able to handle wrestling a croc, I mean wtf does that have to do with ANYTHING about wanting to go to Australia? I dunno.

People are small minded and they seem to make up their minds based on the few things they've experienced, since Crocodile Dundee and Steve Irwin are the few Aussie's americans are exposed to they automatically think thats how all Aussie's are I mean seriously, people need common sense.

I hate that! It really pisses me off!

bloody americans..

Hello, American here - no we don't think you are all Steve Irwin, Crocodile Dundee or even Cate Blanchette. There are plenty of Australians traveling about in the world (quite a few in the area where I am here in America) so we do meet some of you.

To be fair, the stereotypes of Americans that some Aussies have is not that great either. Many Australian tourists in the US seem startled that we are smart, friendly, not fat, don't eat McDonald's 24/7 and aren't constantly shooting things.

I wouldn't worry about it. But people should really never trust in media stereotypes. I guess some people believe anything they see on TV.

No, some of the guys are more like Paul Hogan or Yahoo Serious. Don't you think that they might have been having a laugh?

It's not just Americans, a lot of foreigners think the same. It's all just ignorance and my pet hate is ignorance, can't stand it.

I'm glad some of you have common sense, thank you Amber and psi.
