In our country, the USA, ignorance of the law is no excuse.
When in doubt, don't do it. Drug laws are universally against the law in varying degree's or another. In China, where I live as an ex pat, I stay away from drugs altogether. In the USA I smoked a bit of weed, but here, no way on earth. I have no desire in ending up in a Chinese jail and getting deported. Or worse, being declared a pusher and possibly be put to death.
Yes, drug laws are stupid and a waste of taxpayers money and human resources. But that is how it is now and we must accept it, or pay the consequences.

Everyone in Australia between 10 and 99 know about Indonesian drug laws and that heroin etc is illegal everywhere.
They would have to have been living under a rock all their lives not to know.
They're just greedy and stupid, with the "It won't happen to me attitude".
If it's ok to transport drugs, then why strap them to your body to conceal them. |

Drugs is ILLEGAL in Australia anyhow - so why bother even having them on you on risk of getting caught... trafficking them into another country, well that is just stupidity !
Come on - everybody knows if you traffic drugs it's illegal.
They knew what they were doing, they are not mental, they were just greedy, wanting the big $$$
They've sealed their own fate - don't feel sorry for them! |

Its pretty simple - you get caught with drugs and you KNOW that its against the law. |

I'm sure they would have been well aware that there would be a strict punishment if they were to be caught... unfortunately, they have been naive targets who are now paying a pretty heavy price....I don't think they deserve the death penalty but they are old enough to know that what they were doing was illegal...and even still...what about their morals of supplying drugs to people with obvious problems?? That is wrong too.... |

Why does their knowledge of Indonesian drug laws matter in any way?
We would not tolerate a foreign national pleading ignorance as an excuse to Australian laws so why should we expect the Indonesians to feel otherwise about their's?
Indonesia may have capital punishment for drug crims whereas we don't (for any crimes) but who are we to judge how they administer the law with regards to illegal narcotics? |

Does it matter??? It makes sense to just assume that if the drugs are not over the counter or prescription then they are illegal (everywhere). Further all countries (again assume this) have strict regulations pertaining to the import/export of drugs/narcotics etc. They even impose duties, sanctions etc on certain prescription and in some cases over the counter drugs. There are licenses required to ship/import/export drugs in most countries.
So where is the confusion on knowing about the law??? It is known that drugs are a heavily regulated product around the world. So how could they not know if they have an education and came from a country with a high literacy rate? |

Like the magistrate said:
Ignorance of the law is no defence.
I think you'll find this is the guiding principle in most judiciaries. |

Of course they knew that the Indonesian legal system would be very harsh on drugs. Why would they have gone to such lengths to conceal the drugs otherwise?
Surely you'd do a bit of research. Didn't Schappelle Corby get caught a few months before they did? You would have to be living under a rock not to know.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse in any culture. They deserve everything they get -- first of all for trying to traffic illegal drugs, and secondly for disrespecting the laws of another country, and by extrapolation, the people of that country. It would be like an Indonesian coming to Australia and urinating on our flag in a public place. Total disrespect.
Give the Indonesians some credit. They have a rich history and culture, and are quite rational, intelligent human beings, just like people everywhere else. They have observed all the evidence and come to a rational conclusion. If they have a law that is anti-drugs, then they have the right to enforce that law in their country.
The Bali 9 absolutely knew that what they were doing was against the law in Indonesia, but they blatantly flauted it, and now they have to suffer the consequences. |

After the media saturation with the Schapelle Corby case I would say they definitely knew it was made very clear what happens when you break Indonesia's laws. |

First let me say that I strong disapprove of capital punishment, for ANY offence. But it beggars belief that they didn't know they were smuggling d.r.u.g.s illegally. Hello, they were taped on them under their clothing. If you break the law, don't bother complaining about being caught, though the issue of the AFP involvement needs a Royal Commission, in my opinion. |

Are you saying all 9 of them can't read or don't know that heroin is illegal and kills? Come on! |

The notices in airports are a bit hard to miss, anyway they planned to bring the heroin back here and they knew it's is a crime in Australia with many years in prison the result if caught |

This question serves no useful purpose. Heroin is illegal in all countries - end of story. Please consider their families when posting questions like this. |
