Is is safe to back pack alone in Australia?

Time frame Dec 2007 thru Mar 2008

Show all answers

But Why??
John , it is. But you take a risk doing anything really.
Would you be hitch hiking or other means?

We have in the past and still do from time to time incidents of people /tourists going missing etc, sometimes they just get lost , for example go into remote areas and get disoriented, or well, worse. But you take chances in any country dont you?
Just commonsense and stuff, you'll be right. Dec to March extremely hot (really hot), you will expect high 40's (110 degree plus) in most inland rural areas and desert regions common 50 degree's sometimes. Marble Bar W.A. averages 160 days of over 37 degrees per annum.
There are plenty of tourist centres throughout Australia and backpacker info all over, you will run into other backpackers in most tourist areas all the time. People are generally extremely friendly from coast to coast, and ready to help people even if your stuck somewhere and need a lift. There are thousands of resources and other things available for backpackers in Australia, and I imagine it would be one of the best countries to have that experience.

Very good answers given above already. Follow them.

I am not experienced in backpacker-style of travelling, but ...

As far as Australia goes...safe? generally - YES. People are usually very hospitable and will help you. As long as you exercise common sense and personal safety.

However.... you have to truly appreciate how BIG this country is. It is as big as continental USA but with a lot less cities and urban and roads in between. Way too many foreigners go out to "see the country" and get lost or worse - end up DEAD. Our country is very unforgiving. You have to travel vast distances between places. The climates are extreme. DO NOT underestimate this place - even if you are an experience backpacker.

Dec to March is going to be hot. Very very very hot in a lot of places.

It is advisable that you DO NOT travel in isolated areas alone. We would not like to see your dehydrated body being air-lifted out of there.

Come to Australia - enjoy.

I really think you should find a friend who is willing to go with you as it is safer in numbers.

Depends, if your off to a wildernes area then no Australia has the most venomous spiders in the world and if your biten and out alone your pretty much done for, If your just walking through cities you should be fine, DON'T go out in the wildernes alone

at any given time there is hundreds of backpackers going alone around Australia. We have some great Backpackers accommodation. You would meet such a lot of people from different countries . just make sure you arrange proper transfers from one place to another. Always be aware . and don't put yourself in a risky situation.Keep an eye on your belongings. So if you are sensible and wise you will have a fantastic time. We are a reasonably safe country and our police are excellent just a bit understaffed at times. Even if you found yourself in a vunerable situation chances are you will be ok and find most people helpful. Australia is vast but incredibly interesting with so many fantastic sights. Not a good time of year to be in the tropics though Hot sticky and wet better to stay below the tropic of capricorn Good luck

Its perfectly safe! Just so long as:
a) you don't hitchhike
b) you don't travel in the Northern Terrritory in a combi van
c) you don't stay in a hostel where the fire exits are blocked.

I think most people would agree it is a reasonably safe place to visit.

sure its safe to back pack alone in oz, though as there are so many people doing this you will usually hookup with some other friendly souls..

i wouldnt hitch hike alone, and also would go in to the bush or forrests alone, only beacause if you fall or injure yourself it could be dificult... but again there are so many people travellign around the country there, both foreign and aussies, that you are sure to find someone you connect nicely with and that is interested in doing the same things and you can hook up... then whenever you are ready for some tiem alone you jsut go your separate ways..

you will have a great time, just go and enjoy the adventure and each day, take some time to remember how lucky you are to be free and able to travel the globe,

If you're sticking to the cities, mostly safe. Out in the wild, I wouldn't do it alone.

Australia's genrally a pretty safe. Just dont hitchhike across the Nulaboor, a few people were murdered doing that.
Watch out for snakes. They dont usually come into busy places but be careful walking through long grass. Also, you will never see so many bugs in your life. Wear insect reppelent or you will be covered in mosquito bites. Foreners tend to get bitten more. My aunt moved here from germany over 10 years and she still gets covered in bites. Dont worry about spiders. There are lots of poison ones but iv'e never seen one and ive lived here my whole life, never seen a wild snake either.
You dont really have to worry about stuff getting stolen. Iv'e forgotten bags, remember an hour later and they were right where i left them.
Depending on where your staying it can get VERY hot. Here in Perth summer is about 40C so stay hydrated.
If your going to the beach it's generally pretty safe if you dont go out to far. (50-100m max) Dont go near any blue octopie with bright circles. They are deadly. Most of the jelly fish are harmless. We get stingers, they hurt but you'll be fine.
