Is it a good idea to go to the barrier reef in oz?

I am planning to go to the great barrier reef next year, and wondered how many people get attacked by sting rays or injured diving in these waters. I ask as old stevie irwiny was put to sleep by a great big sting ray, is this sort of thing normal?

It's a brilliant idea. I'm assuming that you won't be bringing a camera crew with you and antagonizing whatever creatures you run into. I was there last October and it was the best diving and snorkeling experience I've ever had. There are wonderful liveaboard dive boats (contact Experience Cairnshttp://www.experiencecairns.com.au/) or you can go out on a day trip and do 3 dives. You want to go between September and October, because by the end of October it's box jelly (jellyfish) season and they can be dangerous. I only saw 1 and ! dove and snorkeled over 15 times when I was there.

was that supposed to be funny???? i think you asked this question just to make a wise crack about steve irwin's death. its a tradgic loss to all australians, it was a freak outta the blue accident, its not a regular occurrace here in australia. i think you could of showed a bit of respect and waited a couple of weks before asking this question.

Only 3 people in OZ history have died due to stingrays. The one that caused his death was in defense mode. The cameraman was directly in front of it and Steve swam too close over the top of it.. The Great Barrier Reef is just that..., great. You should come and visit it's beauty.

be careful and avoid dangerous looking fish

It is very rare, I think it was more about where is was stung ?? You could be walking down the street and get knocked down by a bus I bet this has killed more people than sting rays

You cant live your life like that take some chances

Very rare

No its not normal to be attacked by a sting-ray, infact the stingray was probably feeling threatened and in danger so was protecting itself.
As long as you don't P*S# one off you should be just fine.

Harley D
That is the FIRST time it has been recorded that a Sting Ray has attacked and killed a human.

Mr Irwin, God rest his soul, must have been antagonising the creature for it to react as it did.

Go, at least if you get killed by anything, you will die doing something you enjoy.

If a stingray doesn't get you maybe a shark will or coral sea snake or stone fish or box jelly fish........do I need to go on?

Of course you can stay on land and then you just have to steer clear of snakes, spiders, crocs and god knows whatever else lurks around this great country.

trandru
mr irwin done what he knew best! he was great and it is just a accident < the gret barrier reef is the place to visit!
