Up until only about 20 years ago Aussies celebrated the traditional European or American style dinner with roast turkey, ham, baked veggies, etc, etc. Problem is that it is in the middle of our summer and somewhat inappropriate as the temp could be in the high 30's (about 100'F)! The Aussie trend has gone now to seafood and salad. Since cooked prawns are good to eat cold they go down a treat when it's hot outside... especially with a few ice cold beers to wash them down.
Could you call it a "new" tradition??? |

It's only a reasonably recent "tradition".
When I was a kid my family and just about every other family had a full roast dinner.
Roast turkey, baked ham with all the roast veges and trimmings.
Hot Christmas pudding and custard.
Today our family are much more sensible and have lovely cold salads, cold ham, cold chicken, prawns, Moreton Bay bugs, oysters etc on ice. My husband also likes to have some roast veges sometimes too, but he cooks them for everyone in the Weber.
For dessert we usually have trifle and hot Christmas pudding and custard.
I just can't give up the Christmas pud and custard. Old habits die hard.
We also have birthday cake, because it's my birthday. |

times have changed a great deal over the past twenty years
there are a lot of families who like to cook the legs of lamb, roast chicken and all the good stuff
and there are families also who like to have there family dinners at the beach with a bbq and have a very casual day
and there are many parents who don't get to see there children as they lead a very busy lifestyle
for me as long as my children are happy and my mother in law comes up thats all i need
xmas is the day of happiness and being with families |
