Is it just me, or are there a lot of pretentious, rude people in Melbourne, Australia? |
Of course not everyone here is, but in my two weeks visiting here, I have been insulted by an elderly lady, bumped into hard many times on the street and when I say anything I get told off as though I was at fault, and have seen many people arguing, yelling and fighting in the street including a police officer and a woman. Of all the cities I have been to this one is at the top of the list along with London for being rude and blatantly aggressive. I was here for a week a while back and I don't remember it being like that. Additional Details All over the city, South Melbourne, CBD, Richmond, South Yarra you name it I've had a rude experience there. |

I.m from Sydney, so obviously I am glad to hear anything bad about Melbourne.
But seriously, there are rude and pretentious people everywhere in the world - perhaps you were just having a bad run? I commuted to Melbourne every week for a year from Sydney, and I know that Sydneysiders are definitely more easy going and relaxed about life, but I could still find any number of rude and pretentious people here, especially if I pick my suburbs! I have found rude and pretentious people in France, England, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, United States, Hong Kong, Shanghai, etc etc. Point is, they are all over. People are people, and sometimes we strike more than our fair share of trolls on any given day. Alcohol-fuelled idiocy never helps either.
At the end of the day, IMHO, the nice people in this world outnumber the trolls, even in Melbourne! |

ahhh the city....full of so many d i c k s.
the city has been pretty crazy lately and yeah alot of beatings. i avoid the city...i hate it. Its gotten out of control. The police are still dealing with it.
Go to country areas if you can. Much nicer. Philip island, Williamstown, Werribee Zoo and more are nice to go to. |

You just mixing with the wrong crowd man, if you are on your own for a holiday its probably not too cool, a place. If you live there then its another matter...Melbournians ar all about sport, go to an Aussie Rules match, horse racing, got to the races, walks along the Yarra, shopping in the CBD, live comedy shows & theatre and eating out in South Yarra & Toorak. The Mornington Peninsula is great to visit & Philip Island where the penquins are. Once you tap into the spirit of the place you feel like a Melbournian and attract nice people... Have fun |

I'm originally from Melbourne but lived in London for three years and saw a fair bit of the world.
When I came back I could NOT GET OVER how friendly everyone here is. In the first week my car broke down and a girl stopped to help me. When her car pulled up I panicked and thought she was going to mug me... but she wanted to lend me her phone!
Melbourne's a wonderful city and while there are some thugs around, they've usually come into the city from the outer suburbs to cause trouble.
Like someone before said, you might be having a bad run. A few weeks back I had a day when I was abused by a lady for putting my son into creche for two hours and then treated like dirt by a shop assistant. But the next day everything was back to normal. |

Wow, I'm from Toronto and when I moved the Melbourne, I thought it was the most polite place in the world. Haha, I wonder what that says about Toronto? Also, I find there is a definite lack of crazy homeless people. In fact, I think it's one of the nicest cities I've ever been to. It's all relative... |

last week i dropped a $20 note in the middle of spencer street, i had no idea until 2 blocks later the guy who picked it up caught up to me and gave it back to me!
If you want to meet nice people in melb, try chatting to the people who sell the big issue, theyr'e always lovely and you couldn't help a more noble cause! |

Aren't there wankers everywhere? Stupid guys trying to look tough, rude old ladies...
I'd say it's just been a bad trip for you, unfortunately. You've had some bad luck running into all of these stupid people. It's not Melbourne's fault though! |

Having lived in Melbourne for the past 36 years, I am sorry to hear about this negative feedback. Most Melbournians in my experience have been most kind and helpful to people coming to our city. Please give us another chance. The real Melbourne lies outside of the CBD and close inner suburbs. |

People talking about their mates smacking people??? Let me guess, you heard this stuff on Chapel St, Queen St and Bridge Rd? If you go where young idiots congregate then yes you will hear things like that.
That my friend are the outer suburb tourists that come down to the inner suburbs like Richmond, Prahran, etc at the weekends...they are not the norm but usually young retards with nothing better to do and no constructive ways to show the world how much testosterone they have. The ways they have are limited to: smacking people, hotting up their cars and driving these cars at inconceivably low speeds going up and down Chapel St on a Friday and Saturday night.
Oh, I forget one more thing...grabbing their crotches lots to make sure that its still there...university semester break doesn't help either, more of them come out then. |

As a Melbournian for 45 years I am sorry to say it is not you. Most Melb's are ok, it's just that there is that much stress in everyone with the Nanny State government we have here everyone is up tight. Swanston, and King Streets are definitely no go areas, as is most of St Kilda, Prahran and Richmond.
There are areas where you can be safe and enjoy yourself, but there is always someone who believes they are the only one's with rights to live. |
