Yes, Sydney is safe but I would not recommend walking alone in unlit areas in certain places at night. Sydney University will always have a lot of students milling about, especially around King St Newtown and Glebe till late at night. There will usually be someone at the bus stop. If you are getting the train from Redfern Station though be very cautious. Try to live around Newtown, Glebe, Erskinville, McDonaldtown, Enmore, Camperdown or Annandale. These are all easy to get to Uni by public transport and are reasonably safe (and fun) places to live. Good Luck! |

It really depends on where you live.
For example, if you lived in Redfern then it wouldn't be safe to walk alone at night time.
It's really no different from your country to ours. There are suburbs where one would never walk alone at night time.
The University of Sydney is situated at Camperdown so I would definitely suggest finding an apartment in nearby Newtown (basically less than a 5 minute walk).
I have lived in Newtown many times and the streets are always packed. Newtown is a very trendy suburb and you will find lots of cafes, shops, etc. Newtown is quite reasonably priced also.
But definitely stick to the inner west. |

Sydney is a pretty safe place, but there are certain places you wouldn;t want to be in alone at night (or during the day for that matter).
If you are going to study at Usyd, why not consider the Usyd Village? It is practically on campus, has a lot of security, close to King St (entertainment, food etc), very close to Broadway and the CBD and you'll always have uni students around! Go to the uni website for more details www.usyd.edu.au You can even catch security buses on campus that bring you pretty much to the village.
I went to to usyd and lived in the inner west and have never had a problem. Quite safe if you are street smart.
Good luck :)
ps great choice of uni! |

As safe as any where else in the world. Sure - there is NO guarantee that you won't become a victim of crime, but generally, it is safe. People are out and about all the time in the city. There are plenty of people living alone in Sydney. Public transport runs until very late at night and starts very early in the morning. |

Sydney is overall a very safe city, of course there are some areas you wouldnt go by yourself at night. But you will find out those areas when you arrive.
Living on campus is always a good way to settle in first, that way you can then discover the city and work out where you would like to stay.
Enjoy your trip! |

It is very safe. While I live in Melbourne I have been to Sydney many times. The only thing I would say to you that if you are out at night avoid wearing short skirts or anything that might attract unwanted attention. Also, I know it sounds stupid, but if a bunch of guys are hasselling you or you get a bad vibe, just act as though your boyfriend is around the corner or wave at no one in particular. That way they wont know who you have waived at and assume you are off limits.
But Sydney is one of the safest placeson the planet, you'll be absoloutley fine! |
