Why the crap answers guys?
Serious question. There's a myth that gets around particularly in the US that Australia is virtually crime free. It's rubbish.
But Australia has much lower crime rates than most other countries. I think we're in the bottom five or six crime rates. It's generally safe to walk the streets, but there are still places a smart (or non-criminal) person doesn't go, just like anywhere else. The back streets of places like Darlinghurst (King's Cross area) and St Kilda where the deals are done aren't particularly 'nice' late at night.
We have very strict gun laws but there's still a black market and we still have some gangs but nothing like the LA or NY gangs. The mafia operates here like anywhere else but it tends to be much more civilised than elsewhere in the world.
We have about 1/20th of the gun-related crime of the US - but still hold some notorious histories - like the Port Arthur massacre and Snowtown killings.
Of course the English like to kid themselves that they are superior (see answer no 1) because we are 'convicts'. I might point out that those convicts were about 5% of our population at their peak and they were, well, English, so what do you expect? |

everywhere there is human being there is crime.....human being has white and dark sides...however crime can present itself in different ways depending on the social complexity of each country. However I would say because guns are not easily accessible the crime ratio is not as bad as USA. |

The poms sent to Australia all of there criminals in 1780 and called them convicts, they all went straight, lived a perfect life and committed no crime ever since and we all lived happily here after.

No it's not true. Australia has crime just like any other country. It's just at a lower rate and less often than USA. But it is still pretty safe to walk around the streets at night in most areas, depending on where you live. |

Australia has plenty of crime, just like all countries do. Our casual relaxed attitude however kind of stops the crime from becoming so ... headlined. |

No, it is not true. A quick web search for ¨Australia, crime¨will bring up MANY web sites about crime in Australia. |

Yay Ray A. He's got the best answer so far. Murders? Maybe 350 a year, like one a day. |

Like any country we have our problems. I think comparitively we're a bit better off than many other countries especially when it comes to stuff like murder but unfortunately it's still here.
If you think Australia has no crime at all though, you unfortunately just need to look up what happened at Port Arthur about 10 years ago. The one good thing that came out of that though was we strengthened our gun laws. |
|

Shorty.

Oh bull.... where have you been for the past 219 years?? Australia has only 2 murders a year what a load of ........ Haven't you heard that most of us Aussies are descended from convicts... which doesn't make us all crims but we have crim's blood in us.
---waltsingmatilda2... lol... 1780?? i always thought the first fleet arrived in 1788? |
