A example of the great school system of the USA |

Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere. It is closer to the Sun in December than it is in June. In the northern hemisphere it is the other way round. This means that the seasons in the southern hemisphere are reversed from the northern hemisphere and it is summer in Australia in December.
Don't they teach geography in the northern hemisphere? |

Because in December it is Summer, and in July it is Winter.
The seasons are opposite to that of the Northern hemisphere, just like all of the other countries are in the Southern Hemisphere. |

Yes it is true. And most of the answers above has given you the reason.
And I will have to agree with tentofield and wtg_ib comments about schooling system in the USA. Sad, but true. Do you people KNOW anything at all outside the USA? |

This is because Australia is on the correct side of the Equator. And by the way, the water in our toilets does not swirl in any particular direction. It rolls but does not swirl. |

Why? Because, summer is December makes for fantastic Christmas beach parties..... geesh |

It is because of the tilt in the Earth's axis, When it is summer in the northern hemisphere, it is winter in the southern hemisphere. |

The reason that half the year is cold and half the year is hot has to do with the earth's tilt. The poles aren't straight up and down, but on an angle. That's why the days get longer in the summer and shorter in the winter. In Australia and New Zealand, the seasons are reversed because they are in the southern hemisphere, where the tilt is exactly opposite to what it is in the northern hemisphere.
Go and enjoy. It's a wonderful country and you've love it. |

As you may know the earth rotates around an axis that is tilted in relation to the plane of its orbit around the sun. This is the reason we have seasons.
During the Northern Hemisphere's summer the North Pole is continuously exposed to the sun while the South Pole remains continuously in the shadow of the planet. This causes the hemisphere to be warmer.
During our winter in the Northern Hemisphere the North Pole is in continuous shadow and remains dark. Our days are shorter because of the planet's tilt and the Southern Hemisphere is getting the increased exposure to the sun.
I hope that explains it. It is difficult to imagine what the earth would be like without that tilt on the axis. It would greatly affect our weather and would turn things into a more or less continuous season, probably varying from very hot tropical to much colder temperatures north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle. |

I dont mean to sound rude but haven't you heard of Seasons???
Summer = Hot and Winter = Cold ,pretty simple really.... Pretty much every part of the world differs from the other at some point.Even sometimes in the same country!!!! Wow...... |

Check out the geography map. Didn't we all learn that in school? |

is on the bottom side of the world, like south America. i am living in south America and my family is in north America. they tell me how cold it is, and i tell them how hot i am. the when the weather changes, its reversed.
when the sun is up north, the south is cold, when the sun is down south, the north is cold.
does that make any better sense? |

Yes it is true. We live in teh southern hempishpere.
The sun is further away from us as the southern hemisphere has tilted away from the sun at this time of year - hence it is colder. |

IT IS GLOBAL WARMINGGGG!!!!!!!!!
:)
just kidding
Australia is in the southern hemisphere. that's why seasons are opposite. in December it is Summer and in July it is Winter. |

New Zealand does too, I wonder why.
Could it be we are having our summer when you are having your winter, or is it global warming ? |

Yea it is, it's on the other side of the equator, that's the only reason. There, the toilets flush the other direction too. |
