Is it true that Australians are only friendly when they are travelling overseas?

But when you meet them in their own country they become unfriendly and act differently?
Additional Details
Mrs M; I don't know if Americans are or aren't.

Well people from every country adopt a diplomatic facade when they go abroad. And people are a bit more open minded and tolerant when they're visitors or guests than when they're in their home. So yeah Aussies are a bit nicer when they travel overseas, but so is everyone else.

As for how they are in Australia as an outsider I've found they're in general about as nice and friendly as anyone. I will say that there's an element especially amongst the elderly that is ignorant of the wider world and a tad xenophobic but that's hardly surprising considering it's a bit isolated as a country and was once staunchly anglophile. And like anyone they're a bit resistant to change in their backyard.

But believe me there's plenty of friendly ockers in Australia.

No it's not true. Someone is telling you fibs.
We don't all talk like Steve Irwin either. :)
(I just "love" these wild generlisations that are made about us.)

On the whole you will find we are a friendly bunch of people.
Of course there are people who have an unpleasant personality, but they would be grumpy and unpleasant no matter where in the world they happened to be.

Power Flower
I don't think we're unfriendly in our own country. I was wondering this the other day.... Australia is so multicultural it's often hard to tell tourists from the people that live here. So that may sometimes create the illusion of disinterest.. When I lived in Sydney though I often invited people from overseas that seemed fun and interesting to parties, or to go snorkelling, or to come along on a day trip if we had one planned - had some great times! But I also worked in a restaurant and lived in an area that had a lot of tourists. I probably wouldn't now.... mainly because I live in the country with 2 kids - I just wouldn't have the time!

Mel
Yep, we're outright bastards in Australia.

What a dumb question, why would you change depending on what country you're in.

MetalCraze
all the aussie i have met are pretty freindly

dadnbob
We found the Aussies very friendly in any town (big or small) or in between. It's truly a country without strangers!!!!

Aussie
Hey, C'mon mate ! We're a friendly mob really...whoever has been blowing in your ear has given you a bum steer !

Geez wouldn't we all be grumpy buggers if that was true, we couldn't even stand living in our own country.
Someone is telling you fibs, and big ones at that.!

Rubbish.
Spent 3 weeks in Australia and only met one person who was rude and unhelpful, a taxi driver in Brisbane. He turned up late, complained my bag was heavy even though it was the correct weight for the airline, then picked up and dropped off another passenger when we were supposed to be the only ones.
Everybody else were absolutely fine.
They seem pretty happy actually and are so proud of their country and have a country to be proud of.

storm ahead
Same as any country you get an odd one or two that are unfriendly but the majority are relay nice people.

Tanikaaaa
Making generalisation about anyone is a bit silly.

But in generall I'd say most Aussies are naturally nice, friendly people; its just the way weve been brought up.
