Is it true that Australians per capita get hit by cars more than any other nation?

My British friend told me that Australians per capita have the highest rate of being hit by cars than any other country. Is this true? and if so, why would that be?

That urban myth is false.

Australia has 10.8 deaths per 10,000 vehicles.

The record for number of deaths goes to the Central African Republic with 339.2 deaths per 10,000 vehicles. However pedestrians should be especially wary in Ethiopia where there are 195.1 deaths per 10,000 vehicles. Of those deaths 51% involved pedestrians.

note: statistics quoted refer to the year 1996.

I doubt it... I've been to a lot of countries where the traffic's crazier and the pedestrian are even more death defying!

holly
That's absolute nonsense

I'm not sure about recent figures but Australia had one of the highest rates when I was looking the rates up a few years ago for an assignment. Along with countries like New Zealand, Germany, Canada and Japan. When I did the assignment the United States was actually the highest rate per capita but this might have changed more recently (as all these countries were pretty close)...
The main reason they gave was that these countries had much higher levels of car ownership than developing countries.
But Sweden and the UK had lower rates in comparison...

Mel
We have a lot of deaths caused my motor vehicle accidents but not by being hit by a car. And I'm positive we don't have the worst record, I read some thing only a week ago that talked about India have a high road toll.

I do have some Motoring stats available, and some are:

2005 Road Death Comparative Figures
Road deaths per 100 million vehicle kilometres travelled:

0.6 Great Britain
0.7 Queensland, Australia
0.7 Victoria, Australia
0.8 New South Wales, Australia
0.8 Australian Capital Territory, Australia
0.8 Western Australia
1.0 South Australia
1.0 Tasmania, Australia

However, with the British travelling a total of about 3 times the Australian total, when you multiply the figures, Australia, being a country with a smaller population, has less actual Road Deaths.

Elizabeth
Only if you're talking about kangaroos.

I haven't been able to find anything to verify what your friend said, but that doesn't mean it's not true.

You can't believe anyone who is British. There is a rivalry going on between us and them, of course they are going to feed you some bullsh!t like that.

America is the country that has 16 year olds driving with their full license , I don't think its US with the problem.
