Not only is the Earth's rotation too weak to affect the direction of water flowing in a drain, tests you can easily perform in a few washrooms will show that water whirlpools both ways depending on the sink's structure, not the hemisphere.

Into each "drain event" there are a whole lot of different factors that determine which way the water in a drain is going to spin, among them:

* The shape of the drain, and the basin the water is in
* Whether it is level or tilted
* Which direction the water is moving in when you open the drain

Well it seems this is a bit like religion - everyone has different ideas - and examples to prove their beliefs.
When I went to America, the water definately drained in the opposite direction to Southern Hemisphere - this was obvious in the flat syle toilets of USA - bit harder to detect in our narrow outlets.
So I went on the internet just now to prove my findings and was surprised to find "evidence" both for and against.
If you go to this site it will claim, what I have always "known"
Naturally you believe what you saw with your own eyes as I did. But - well, now your question has provided another question for me, instead of the answer I had

However that is the only claim I could find to prove my point - I found a lot more that say - no it isn't true. So I have learnt something tonight

Tropicales
Sometimes it runs clockwise, other times can be counter-clockwise. But is has nothing to do with the hemisphere you live in.
Check these links...really interesting information...

moo_the_conqueror
No. It goes down the drain

pixie
It's the right way for us!

It doesn't flow "out of the bathtub", it flows down the drain.
The kangaroo makes sure of that.

It's all the kangaroos fault.

Princesspea
yep. the water comes out of the plug and goes back through the taps :)

But Why??
it heads in a uni-lateral direction, then forms a perfect right hand break, with over-head barells.
