i at at age of near 50 cannot read ore write either can anybody i know i believe there are 2(two) people who live in Darwin that can1(one)of them can read & the other can write(neither can do both) but as they had a fight last week & are not talking to each-other so at the moment all contact with the world is on hold till they get over it

that is ridiculous and highly offensive that you would even THINK that a highly developed western country is illiterate. 99% of people over the age of 15 can read or write, the same as the USA and the UK.

Australia has a 99% literacy rate. This rates equal with the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany and Japan.

Surprisingly Cuba, Estonia and Poland have the highest literacy rates in the world. Unsurprisingly, Burkina Faso (Africa) has the worst literacy rates in the world.

Nope. Australia has 99% literacy.

Although as to how advanced their reading and writing skills are, that's another matter. If you ever come here and you examine the magazine racks you'll be dumbstruck about the high ratio of periodicals that relate to sports, Hollywood celebrities and other things lightweight.
