From what I've seen here on Answers I'd have to agree that some think Australia and New Zealand are the same country.

Some others think we are actually Austria.
(You know Austria in Europe.)

I can't comment on whether this is representative of the majority of Americans.

No, just the idiots.

Spazzed out <--xoxo-->
Some of them...

I just asked a question saying what pops into ur mind when i say new zealand and some said wheres that so.....some americans may think NZ is part of Aust (i don't mind that i like kiwis) some don't know what or where it is and some know exactly what and where it is...

Me =)
Probably

Bella
Well, I'm Australian, so I can't really answer this question. I have heard people from overseas say that they thought New Zealand was part of Australia, like Tasmania, but they were English, not American. I think having Tasmania as part of Australia leads to some of the confusion, plus 'outsiders' seem to think that the Aussie and Kiwi accents are identical. O_O I guess it all contributes to the confusion.

I think even Australians get mixed up sometimes too, though. Have you ever noticed how the Aussie media call Russell Crowe Australian when he's made a success of himself, but when he's making a fool of himself, they call him a New Zealander? So which is it?

No, Where in the hell did you hear that one... **Nevermind, I just read these stupid answers...good lord...

Jess
Yahoo automatically classifies some New Zealand questions in the Australia section for some reason so some people probably appear more stupid than they actually are.

I asked a question about New Zealand a while ago and people got narky that it was (automatically) posted in the Australia section. I'm Australian and 1/2 my family is from NZ so I'm fully aware that they're 2 separate countries but that didn't stop people from assuming otherwise.

But there are probably a few who do think they are the same country...

Rick M
I thought New Zealand was the capital of Rhode Island.

As a New Zealander I cant really answer but I'm guessing the majority wouldnt have a clue about anything to do with New Zealand. I have been to the states twice in the last few years and most people assume I am an Aussie or English from my accent. One girl at a department store asked me where I was from, and when I told her NZ she then stated her mother in law was from Whales and asked if I knew her???...

QLD RULES
Whats New Zealand never heard of it?

I'd be willing to say probably. On average most Americans aren't always the best with geography, but then again the same could be said for other nationalities.

Bingalee
Nothing would surprise me about Americans. Some of them think we have kangaroos hopping up George St in Sydney!

tamara m
It's not just Americans, I've met some Australians who think it is too!
