I live in Victoria near these little guys and yes, if they get covered in oil and so need to be washed in detergent (thereby getting rid of their own natural oils which keep them warm), they need to be kept warm in order to stay alive. The best way to do this is to dress them in little woollen knitted outfits. There is a network of old ladies (through senior citizen clubs and and the country women's association) that are ready to be mobilized should there be an oil spill.
If you think these guys are cute, you should go to the penguin parade at Phillip Island. At dusk every day hundreds of them arrive home after a day at sea and march up the beach to their burrows. Quite spectacular! |

Yeah. The Country Women's Association knit them so the penguins don't get cold.
We are also after government funding so that we can buy the penguins a heater. That way they can stop playing raquetball to keep warm in the winter. Otherwise we'll have to buy more raquetball equipment.
News just in. The penguins say they are sick of raquetball and just want a shipment of hot water bottles. Do what you can and send hot water bottles now, so that the poor penguins don't have to play raquetball anymore with substandard equipment. |

No it is true...
I saw it in an article on ninemsn.
Anyways, the reason they clothed the penguins is because they were suffering from something due to an oil spill and couldn't keep themselves warm.
Although it sounds stupid it is true -- see for yourself!
I can't find the original article but here is one similar~

Not as a rule, but I remember something about dressing some for protection, something to do with oil leaking from a ship or boat into the sea. I can't really remember but it was something like that. |

Yes.
But they prefer tuxedos.
That's why they're called 'penguin suits'.
