Is it true that when flushing Australian toilets, the water goes down the opposite direction as American ones?

I saw this fact on TV once, but I wasn't sure if it were true...
I tried flushing the toilet at my parents' house in Houston but the water just went straight down ((

But a few weeks ago, when I was in New Orleans, I did the same experiment and the water went down in a counter-clockwise rotation!

Soo...

*rushes to the toilet to flush it*

Well damn! it just goes straight down :(( how boring.
But it goes clockwise motion with all our sinks ..haha

You do know we have water restrictions here atm so you owe me with all this experimenting ;)

Dan
My toilet's water doesn't even swirl around as it flushes nor do my friends and family or any that I've seen. I believe those are more of the older designs.

By the way, did you get this idea from an episode of the Simpsons where Bart phones Australia to ask the same thing?

Yes it's true. Anything below the equator water tends to swirl in a clockwise rotation. Same is true in sinks and bathtubs, water swirls in a counter clockwise rotation above the equator and clockwise below the equator.

I have noticed that in the US your toilets are 3/4 full of water, our's only have a small amount at the bottom (we don't get splashed when doing a number 2).

In the US the toilets seemed to just suck it straight down, no swirling. In Australia our pours water through to push it down, again no swirling.

If you were to look when emptying a bath tub you may see it rotating.

Both of my toilets here in Australia have water going in a clockwise direction.

It's NOT a myth, it is true. My daughter made it her business to check when visiting the Northern Hemishere & it is true.

No it is not true the volutes in toilets are manufactured the same way causing the water to swirl in the direction it does. It is an old wives tale that it swirls the opposite way.

I actually do not flush my toilet, I have a helper koala to do that for me. The water does flush clockwise though. Now are sewer systems are way more interesting, crocs eat our poop; it's true.

No, it's an urban legend:

Do toilets in the US flush? In Australia we have pit toilets.
