Melbourne Australia has it all over Melbourne Florida. Some of the best resteraunts in the world are in Melbourne Australia, and I cannot say enough about the Victoria Market. The people in Melbourne are great. On the down side, it can be a bit pricey for housing, and traffic inthe CBD is horrible. The commuter trains are okay, running frequently in the CBD, and shopping is tremendous. Hope your dreams come true, and your travel agent doesn't muck it up, and get you tickets to Florida...

I was born in Melbourne Australia and still live in the same state. Melbourne can be really great in my opinion - but it depends on your own wants and needs. If you are looking for kangaroos in the streets you will be bitterly disappointed. The website www.whitehat.com.au is created by a Melbourne local who loves the place - so that would be a good site to do some investigation. (I would subscribe to the newsletter at that site as well)

Melbourne is a fabulous place to visit and live. Its culturally diverse and has lots of opportunity for eating out, nightlife, festivals and the arts if thats what you're into. Its also less expensive than Sydney and more lively than Brisbane. That said, I'm saying this only about the cities. Australia has many beautiful places to see and experience outside the cities in all states. If you're visiting you'll find different parts of Melbourne city offer different things - ie Docklands is quite different to say, Brunswick St. Melbourne is also easy to get around and fairly safe, but in any city you have to be alert.

Melbourne is culturally diverse, is the restaurant and cafe capital of Australia. I believe that Melbourne locals are very friendly and open. People are much more laid back than those in Sydney. It's a very unique city. It has a wonderful sports precinct and also many cultural events happening all the time.

Once can never complain of being bored in Melbourne as there is always something to do.

The things I love most about Melbourne is the culture of the city, the scenery in and around the city. I also love that it is a cultural melting pot. Melbourne is a very welcoming city. After living in Sydney for eight years returing to Melbourne was like being greeted by an old friend.
I love finding little cafes and bars tucked away in unlikely corners and spaces, grungy and neglected areas that people use for showing street art, I love how there's such a passion for all kinds of art in Melbourne, the many beaches all around the city, the comedy festival, vietnamese restaurants and the food hall at victoria market.

Its great. Without wanting to sound like a broken record;
Its got some of the best restaurants (as someone said above), its culturally diverse, the public transport system does leave a bit to be desired, but all round its fairly efficient, the sport is great, the locals are nice.. the cost of living is higher than some other areas of Australia (like queensland), but there are going to be fluctuations anywhere you go.. Currently Melbourne is experiencing a significant rental property problem (there are hardly any properties available, especially in the inner suburbs) so its best to organise something before you arrive, or you'll be living in a hotel forever!

G'day Nikole & Teany,

I am an immigrant and have been living in Melbourne for 16 years and never regret the move at all. I do not have Anglo-Saxon appearance, I speak English with an accent and I still feel like I am born in this country all along. My neighbors are combinations of immigrants and true blue Aussies and we are getting along very well. Racism will always be there in any country, but I definitely do not feel it here.

Now... this is what I can say about Melbourne:
1. First of all... some people do not like the weather in Melbourne (you can have 4 seasons in one day). However, if you read the first article from The Age newspaper, you will find out that the weather is still more preferable than the other cities. Sure you can have 42C day in summer, but almost immediately you'll get a much cooler weather pretty soon afterwards. It is very rarely that you got 2 or 3 consecutive days of hot weathers (unlike Sydney, Brisbane or Perth).
2. Melbourne is a city of diversity. If you are a newcomer, and you do not look 'Anglo-Saxon', you do not feel like an 'alien', since you can find almost every race in the world walking in the city. They are both immigrants and overseas students.
3. THE FOOD!! Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Thai, All-you-can-eat, African, Lebanese, Mexican, Sea Food... anything else? All available and lots of them in a very-very-very affordable price
4. Pretty good public transport system. With one ticket, you can switch from train, tram and bus. They do not always come on-time, but still reliable and improving (www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au).
5. SHOPPING!!! Original branded clothing sold very cheap. There are even shopping tour, where the participants are taken to retails outlets just for shopping. Big temptations for ladies.
6. Crime rates... just read the second article on the bottom.
7. Cost of Living... I'll say it's second most expensive city after Sydney. Altho I have to say that some cities in Queensland can be more expensive to live.
8. Tourist attraction. This is the area that I think Sydney is better than Melbourne, since it has most of it's attraction within its suburbs. Most Melbourne attraction are pretty much out of Melbourne, such as the gold mines in the cities of Bendigo and Ballarat, The Great Ocean Road, Lakes Entrance, Grampians, skiing in Mt. Buller etc.

Welcome to Melbourne and enjoy.

Nikole apparently they didn't realize this was in Austrialia so you were probably talking about Melbourne Australia instead of Florida. I would like to know too. I'm thinking about moving there for a few years.

Melbourne, Florida is very nice. The beaches are very close and clean. There are a lot of places to shop too, and it doesn't look as "junky" as a lot of Florida.
