Is melbourne a really safe place to live?

Yes.
As safe as any major city in Australia.
As far as the news of "race riots" - keep in mind that these are isolated incidences in very specific localities.

NO place in the world is completely safe. IF you are at the wrong place at the wrong time, you will get hurt.

iansand9876
No. It is full of Victorians.

guy0307
YES

Melbourne is a very safe city.

Richard P
Lived there for several years. Any city with 3 million residents is going to have some issues, but nothing like a comparably sized city in the USA where your life isn't worth a nickel to wacko criminals.

it just attitude
I ve heard that in there racial crime often has happened. especially to asian immigrater.

It isn't that bad.

Sydney is where the race riots etc were.

Melbourne is like every place, there are safe parts and dangerous parts. Generally speaking though Melbourne is safe.

Especially when compared to Geelong/Ballarat

movngfwd
I thought it was very much like Toronto.
Racial tolerance across australia is nothing like North American's
However, violence in Australia relative to the United States... is nothing to COMPARE!!!
They have fewer crimes... and fewer cops....
you'll find that crime.. .when it happens... its ALL over the news!
They like to Inflate their news... and exaggerate things just a little!

have fun
