Is there a beach in Brisbane?

I am going to study abroad at QUT, how far is the beach from this university?

Besides the Gold Coast, which is an hour away, are there any closer beaches in Brisbane?

And if possible, could anyone please describe the vibe of Brisbane?

Yes - it is at South Bank

It is an artificial beach - along the river. Great place to relax in the middle of the city.

Brisbane is on the Brisbane River, not the coast so you have to travel a short distance to find an ocean beach. There are beaches closer than the Gold Coast.

The best beaches are on the Sunshine Coast, which is about an hours drive from Brisbane. If you can, try and head up here - they are much less crowded than the ones on the Gold Coast. Brisbane has a good manmade beach in the South Bank area of the city, but it can get a bit crowded also. Generally a nice place, good public transport to the inner city, suburbs and surrounding areas. It's very clean and friendly also. But I have to say that I enjoyed Melbourne and Sydney a bit more.

Brisbane is on the river not on moreton bay - in any event, most areas of beach along the coast suburbs are mangrove swamp. For surf beach you have to travel about one hour north to Sunshine Coast or one hour south to the Gold Coast. This is because of the islands in Moreton Bay that stop the waves i.e. Moreton Island, N.&S. Stradbroke Islands. You can take ferries to these Islands and go surfside.
For beaches with calm water - there is Nudgee, Redcliffe area, Cleveland, Redland Bay or the Islands like Coochiemudlo, Russell.

But Why??

If you live in Brissy mate, go north to Caloundra or Noosa, not far away....

Brisbane is a friendly, bustling city with good weather, a nice river, botanical gardens (next to QUT), good shopping but not as good as places like Singapore, London or Hong Kong. There are many students from overseas who come to Brisbane to study so you will see many Asians when you walk down the main shopping street (Queen Street Mall). The shopping is a 5 min walk from QUT. The public transport is very close to QUT. The beaches.... well, they're a bit further. The man made beach is across the river - about 10 mins ferry ride or 15-20 mins easy walk. It's a nice little beach, and quite interesting to have such a thing so close to a city. The 'real' beaches are much further away. Gold Coast is about an hour drive. The northern beaches are more than an hour drive. Byron Bay is about 2 hours drive away (south) and it has good beaches.
If you say what country you're from, we can give you an idea of how different Brisbane will be from your hometown.

Aquaadventure
Better not go to Queensland University of Technology if you want to enjoy the beach life. I do not know which country you are from...otherwise I would have given you better suggestions.
