Is there a shortage of teachers in Australia? |
I am training to be a secondary school science teacher in the UK, with my main areas (for A-Level) being Chemistry and Biology. I know that there is a shortage in the UK and will therefore not have a problem finding a job.
However, after many visits, would love to work in Australia. Therefore, after a few years experience, would I be able to do this?
Thanks |

I don't know about other states, but Queensland (the state with the BEST climate and lifestyle), definitely has a shortage of secondary science teachers. My daughter is one and within minutes of her being listed as available when she graduated, there were schools calling from all over the state with contract offers. She had no experience whatsoever at the time.
There is a big demand for biology and chemistry teachers, but physics teachers can just about name their own terms. In Queensland, teachers nearly always spend the first few years of their careers on contracts of variable lengths, but I've heard of physics teachers being made permanent within a few months of graduating.
As far as getting a visa is concerned, Secondary School Teacher is one of the occupations on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) which is a 'must' for obtaining a visa but as our points test stands at the moment, you would need 1 year's experience to get enough points in total to be granted an Independent Skilled Worker visa.
Of course, the requirements will probably change over the next few years, but I can't see you having any problems - they're more likely to change in your favour as our government increases its emphasis on education. |

Yes we do have a shortage and teachers, and yes,you should have no problem living and working in Australia once you are qualified.
Have a look at this website,it will have all the answers to any questions you may have living and working in Australia, advise which visa you should apply for,and all the forms you will need to apply for your visa.

There has been a shortage of male teachers for some time now. many young children have no male role models outside their families, so come on down our boys need you. |

There is definitely a shortage of well qualified high school level Maths teachers, and I believe that that shortage extends to sciences like Chemistry and Physics. I honestly don't know whether the migration rules reflect that fact, but I hope they do.
The highest demand for teachers is in areas outside of the capitals, so you may need to be prepared to teach somewhere quite remote, at least when you first arrive. |

I am a primary school teacher and there are not many jobs for primary school teachers.BUT Chemistry and Biology teachers are hard to find.So you should be OK. |

We need your help!
My school is affected, so are other schools!
There is a shortage of qualified teachers here. Our school have more casual teachers than ever and the problem is just worsening.
For example, next term, our Studies of Religion II teacher will be going on leave, leaving us this fresh Uni-graduate to take our class who may not have enough skills in the field, compared to our real teacher who had over 20 years experience.
I'm not too sure about the particular KLA's affected though. |
