Twist

Is there any particular reason why most Australians live in coastal areas?

I'm sure living by the ocean is pretty cool but it seems like there are VERY few people living inland compared to other countries, European and North American countries have there population pretty evenly distributed.
is there something bad about the Australian interior?

I have lived 800km inland from age 0-10 and have now been on the coast from age 10-20 and I can see why so many people prefer to live near the beach.

The first settlements were costal hence or first city foundations were made on the coast and have grown from there. Exports from the country such as natural resources (particulary coal in my region) is shiped from port to port, meaning towns need to be established around the demand for workers which stem in all drections (requiring basic comodities in the reason, stores, resturants then as the population boom's more is built and reaches a tourist status requiring more developement)

There is something about the aussie lifestyle where everyone loves the beach and it is the envy of everyone to own a coastal property with you own backdoor access to the ocean.

Don't get me wrong, the outback isn't that bad. Didn't mind the rivers for a swim and the endless tracks to ride motorbikes but the lifestyle and oppertunities of the beach deffinatly have a much greater lour then the dusty outback.

The interior is the Simpson Desert--about 140 degrees in the summer and almost no water; parts are also sacred tribal aborigine land as well.

If you want to see people living underground in the middle of the country because of the heat; google "Coober Pedy"

Maybe, the fact that two-thirds of Australia is desert or semi-desert might give you a clue.
We don't all live right beside the ocean, some of us are a couple of hundred kilometres/miles inland.

Because the rest of Australia is desert!

What's not to like living coastal, beaches right on your doorstep.

Also remember Australia has a very small population compared to American and other countries that a a fraction of the size.

EG: 60 million in the UK, 301 million in USA compared to 22 million in Australia

Australia is a very large country with a very small population - most of the interior of the country is desert, we simply live in the more inhabitable reagions

faithless
Yes, a lot of it is desert, not much rainfall or vegetation or anything and quite hot too. The only thing most people go to those remote places for is mining and even then they often have fly in-fly out jobs so they work there for a few weeks then fly home to the city for a weeks break.

Basically 99.9% of Aussies love the beach....that is our culture!!

troubled down under
If you click on the link below you Will see what the rainfall across Australia is like and that is the reason that the centre of Australia is so sparsely populated both for humans, livestock and vegetation

i'm sure at least part of the reason is financial. it would cost billions to establish the infrastructure in the middle of the country. the only natural resources we have in the outback are minerals and obviously all cities need fresh water. this is in scarce supply in the middle of the country.

in addition, we don't have the population density that european and america does. so there is no REASON to spend all that money to build the infrastruture and move out there.

also, i believe that much of australia's land is subject to native title - meaning it is acknowledged that the land 'belongs' to australia's indigenous people who were here a lot longer than white australia. native title would probably prevent developers from developing anything on the land without their permission

near the ocean has always been the best place to live
here in australia we have so much land that there is no need to live inland
that's all the capital cities are on the coast

But Why??

come here and you'll see why.
