I'm Canadian but lived in Geelong (west of Melbourne) for 6 years. During that time I had opportunity to visit all the States and Capitals. It's a beautiful, beautiful country and Aussies are quite similar to Canucks so we interact very well together.

It's an extremely expensive place to live and salaries in general are lower than Canada. No tipping!.....but wait till you see the prices on the menus!
Of all the places I travelled, I probably liked Queensland the least..........it was just too hot and steamy there.
Western Australia was amazing.
Coming from a cold country, Victoria would probably be the most comfortable state for you weatherwise....their seasons are more defined.....but there are times in Vic when you hit all 4 seasons in 1 day!
Wherever you go, you'll love it!
