Is there snow is australia?

someone told me that if it's cold in the north, it's hot in australia. does that mean that it doesn't snow in australia? is it really hot there?

if not all parts of australia snows, which part does?

The Australian snow fields are greater in size than Switzerland but most Australians have never seen snow.
You have to travel to the highlands of Vic and NSW to get to the snow ( we don't count Tas as being in Aust).
To work out what clothes to bring it is best to contact people in the area that you will be staying as Aust is so large that the tropical areas are hot during winter and the cold south will freeze your but off.

Enjoy your stay

been there done that
In Australia, snow can fall in the mountains of Victoria, Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales and Tasmania. There is a regular snow season in several areas which have seasonal ski tourism industries. Sometimes snow has even been reported in the mountains of South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland though this is very rare.

Snow at sea level has been recorded on mainland Australia but has happened more times in Tasmania, some of the snow at sea level has fallen in the off season like summer. Snow has fallen nearly everywhere in Tasmania, though it is rare to fall in the north coast at sea level.

The occasional cold snap, caused by cold air drifting north from Antarctica, can cause significant snowfall in rural areas, as well as major cities such as Hobart, Melbourne's outer mountain suburbs and Canberra. Such occasions are rare, but have occurred in 1951, 1986 and 2005.[

It snows in the Southern parts of Austarlia. We have ski resorts in NSW and Victoria. The season starts about June and ends in August. It also snows in the South West of Western Astralia, but there are no mountains there and hence no skiing.

Tasmania is the small island state at our very southern most tip. It snows there even in January and February...the height of our summer. But you can get snow then in Tassie...and not just rarely. Usually once or twice every summer, as the next land fall from there is Antarctica!!

We are a huge country, with all types of terrain and climates which range from tropical, to Mediterranean and cool temperate.

Google us sometime. We are really very diverse!!

it snows in the mountains or in Tasmania. But no cities get snow and its summer here right now.

Bring clothes that you will wear in springs. No huge jackets or stuff like that because the lowest temperature if will ever get is 15 degree Celsius

It mostly only snows up in the mountains in certain states.

It can get fairly warm here so if you are just attending college then you won't need to pack snow clothes,

Of course when it's winter in the northern hemisphere, it's summer in Australia but we do get winter here - our winter is June, July, August.

It only snows in the mountains in Australia and there are no cities or universities in those regions - only ski resorts and the towns servicing them and even in the ski areas, they often need to make artificial snow.

People talk about it snowing in other parts but they don't mean snow like you do when you ask 'does it snow?'. Anything that falls anywhere else invariably melts within a few hours and only ever happens on a day or two in a particularly cold winter.

The most southerly city you're likely to be studying in is Melbourne and that is at latitude 37Β°47'S and pretty well everything north of there is warmer. Oakland CA is 37Β°48'N and pretty well everything north of there is colder so you can see that our whole country is a lot closer to the Equator (and therefore warmer) than most of the USA.

University (college) students here generally dress fairly casually and jeans, pants and skirts are the norm. What else will depend on where you are. Where I live in Brisbane, our climate is subtropical and even in the depths of winter, you can wear tshirts during most days with no more than a long sleeved top or jacket needed for cold snaps. In Melbourne it can get pretty cold but nowhere near as cold as most parts of the US.

Snow only falls on the mountains in some states
yes it gets hot here
remember we have summer in december, january, febraury
and winter in june, july, august

Ok, it does snow in Australia, but my overseas friends aren't entirely wrong for, in reality, snow is rare in Australia, particularly when compared to countries in the Northern Hemisphere. Although snow occasionally falls in the SouthWest of Western Australia, the SouthEast of South Australia, the highlands of Tasmania, Victoria, NSW and even SouthEasternQueensland, regular falls outside the Snowy Mountains area of SouthEastern New South Wales, NorthEast of Victoria and central Tasmania are extremely rare.

To be a fair contest, we should exclude the towns directly in the snowy mountains (towns like Cabramurra, Adaminaby and Jindabyne). This leaves the probable main contenders as Oberon, Orange, Blackheath, Katoomba, Guyra, Nimmitabel and possibly Cooma in NSW. In Victoria, there's really only Ballarat, Bright and Beechworth.

Of Australia's major cities, Canberra is the most likely to receive snow, followed by Hobart.

For the clothing thingie, it depends on where will you be studying. Prepare normal winter clothings, water proof is not exactly needed as it doesnt snow much. Temperature is around 32F/0C during winter in southern Australia.
