Take sunscreen! And do not stay out in the sun for long periods! If you are out in the sun, either keep a bit more covered or put shitloads of sunscreen on (especially your shoulders, your nose and the backs of your legs) Stupid and basic as it sounds, one bad burn can ruin your holiday! |

Don't bring in any food items - mostly not allowed. I brought a sealed box of tea bags with me but had been warned in advance by friends to be sure to declare them or there would be problems. I did declare them, and it was fine. Going from one state to another there are bins to ditch all food items. They don't allow even fruit across state borders, so forget about that apple you thought you'd munch as a snack on the way.
My daughter bought a straw sunhat at an airport shop on the way - it was taken off her in Oz. The regulations are to protect against any foreign pests etc. coming in from outside the country, and it is pretty strict.
You won't find much jetlag going over as when you arrive it will be 7 or 8 hours closer to bedtime, with the time difference. However, it is the other way on the return journey, and you may arrive very very tired. Takes me several days to be back to normal again.
The sunlight is brighter in Oz, so wear good sunglasses, even in May. I'm going then too, for my fifth visit. You'll have a great time and find a month is not nearly enough!! Enjoy your trip !! |

Don't judge us all by some rude people you may encounter.
They are in the minority, I assure you.
Have a wonderful holiday and take care.
Plus we don't automatically tip for all services like they do in the USA. (Just in case you thought we were like them.)
Also, try to go to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary if you go to the Gold Coast.
It's really worth the entry fee.

Edit:
Roasted macadamia nuts (in many flavours) are available in many places, not just at the airport. |

Australians like to talk about Australia. Especially in the country. We like to share secrets about the country with foreign guests.
Get off the beaten path and visit some country towns and just have a chat to the locals. They'll let you in on some really special places to see in the area that most tourists never get to see. |

Sunscreen , Hat , Glasses.
The water is drinkable from the tap in most areas of AU so don't waste lots of $$ unless you have to on bottled water.
Avoid spending lots of $$ at duty free places you can get things on cheaper in normal retail when they are on special.
IF you like macadamia's then try the garlic roasted ones that you can only get at the airports ( I missed out last OS holiday they had run out of stock) |

swim between the flags
There are many dodgy guys here - be careful!!!

Do not use banks to cash your travellers cheques in Australia, you get charged for the privilege, use the little Bureau De Change kiosks instead, there great, be safe, be careful, be happy and have the most amazing time of your life. |

You will hear the phrase ...SLIP, SLOP, SLAP.
This means..Slip on a tea shirt - slop on some sun screen 15+ - slap on a hat. The sun is very savage and can do damage.
Hope you have a ball. You will have to tell us when you get home how it went. |

if you've visited some of the beautiful old cities in europe, you don't need to spend too much time in ours, while they are great in their own way, there is allot more to see and 6 weeks isn't long. never hitch hike. don't try to drive from one end to the other, you will spend all your time driving, catch a plane, it's expensive, but you won't be too tired from driving to enjoy yourself when you get there. try and visit all of the states if you can, they are all different.
be safe and enjoy your trip, we are mostly all friendly. oh and you don't have to pay to use the loo. |
